hey there I'm new to this site and I'm wondering if i can get info on next years grand slam west!

It is scheduled for June 5-7 but the planners are currently working on new requirments for permits and insurance. These details will need to be ironed out before there are any new details to pass on.

Can you let me know the details when they come together and where to register? I go to Moab a couple times every year and always by my self cause I don't know when any other Grand owners head that way! most the wheelers in this area are Toy owners!

That site has not been updated - it's still info for 2008.

The tentative dates for 2009 are June 5 and 6. That is NOT set in stone yet. And yes, it looks like we'll probably cut back to just 2 days for 2009 (primarily because of the BLMs new rules).

I am going to be changing quite a bit of my line up.

My 98 I am going to cut the roof off and build a new cage with some kind of top that will resemble the factory. It will have double B and C pillers that have 1/8" plat molded in between to give the jeep the look of a factory top but the strength of a buggy. For sure some new bumpers and fuel cell. Also plan on some new tires and wheels, I hate the 15" wheels and want to move up to a 17"-20" alum. And maybe some LTB's or the new 42" or 40" krawler.

On my TJ I am pretty much leaving it alone, exept for some 35" krawlers. Change the gears out to 5.13's. Add my magnaflo cat back (that I bought like two years ago and still havn't installed it) also need to install my front upper control arms... maybe some other small nit pick stuff.

My 95 ZJ will be getting eather moab's or AEV wheels and 35's, an 8.8 or 44 rear, with 4.56's and some kind of lockers... rubicon, ARB or OX. Also building a rear swingout tire carrior. I need to build a skid plate too but I want to do long arms at the same time so that may waight till next year.

Can't do the work here because of HOA rules, so I'm payin' for it. But since I've put this off for so long, it's be worth it to me. Should be finished in a couple of weeks.

Ryan - you need to paint over the centercaps. Yellow is so 90s.

I just painted over the rock rash on my AEVs. Luckily Hammerite Black looks very similar to the powdercoat I choose for my AEVs.

I have the following to finish up:
1. Relocate and replace horns.
2. Trim up some unsightly sheetmetal remnants from factory bumper supports.
3. Install bumper end cap-to-subfame supports.
4. Rework the lower crossmember to allow better protection for bumper center sheetmetal.
5. Fab fairlead mount.
6. Cut off factory tow hooks.
7. Fab up mounts for and install Dodge Ram tow hooks.
8. Mount winch controller box behind grill.
9. Fab remote mount for winch controls receiver (relocate control receiver to now-empty access hole for stock windshield washer reservoir).
10. Relocate upper mounting holes for center sheetmetal section to get a tighter fit.
11. Fab fender well liners.
12. Install mounts for low profile fog/wheeling lights. Re-wire and mount fogs.
13. Properly install winch and rope (current bolts are borrowed grade 5s).
14. Time permitting (yeah, right), fab up a better washer reservoir mount.

What do you mean? You can run Pritchett with out lockers. I lost my ARB compressor just entering the trail a few years ago and kept going, open/open. :smt118

CrawlerReady

Oh I know I can run it open/open....I did it with my old XJ years back. However I'd rather not, and with how tough that trail keeps getting, open/open now days is merely impossible.

What I mean is I blew a rear carrier bearing last trip and need to replace that so I can re-install my rear drive shaft. I had to finish Pritchett last trip with only front wheel drive...and my front ARB has a leak (probably blown seal) so I only have 1 wheel drive currently.

Gonna fix it this and next weekend though since I'm headed to Moab over Memorial weekend as well :)

Well shit...found out what's up with the front and rear. Good news is the front ARB issue is just a $20 easy fix. Bad news is the rear axle is toast.....well I mean I broke the spool, the pinion is a bit chewed up and has some very small fracture line cracks which I don't think should be run on. So rather than throwing $450 at this axle, I have 1 1/2 weeks to get a new axle, all the parts and install it for my Memorial trip to Moab....if I can't make that then I'll for sure make GSW.

Not sure on any plan yet, still having issues with my 6-lug wheel choice...What I do know is 5.13's are going in for sure.

Plans:

5.38 gearing
Weld spiders (for now)
Disc brakes
5 to 6 lug adapters

Well just found out that 5 to 6 lug adapters are not offered unless I do a 2-piece adapter because the patterns overlap. Since a 2 piece adapter probably wouldn't hold up to hard wheelin', I'm going to need to get custom shafts drilled to be 6-lug.

SOOO........decision time.

Do I just do the standard 33-spline 1.4" alloy shaft upgrade from Moser...or do I do 35-spline 1.5" or 40-spline 1.75" shafts? The 33 and 35 spline shafts would run ~$600 with a matching spool, and the 40 spline would run ~$700.

If I do the 35 or 40 spline shafts I need to get a new case to fit the larger carrier bearings ~$200.

So do I spend ~$600 for 33-spline that I would probably never break, or $800 for 35-spline that if I ever broke I should be kicked in the balls, or $900 on 40-spline that I should quit this hobby if I broke?

edit: just so everyone is aware, the stock axle is 31-spline 1.31".

jfowlzj95
05-14-2009, 02:14 PM
Go ahead and go for 35 or 40 spline that way you should 'never' have to worry about it. You're gonna have to order another custom shaft if one breaks, so might as well get a shaft that has the least chance of breaking.

x2. Definitely go 35 or 40spl. Given that the 9" is a pretty strong axle, you should be able to run your new shafts... forever, so why no make them the last you'll ever need? on the other side of the coin, if you don't upgrade everything in the 9 right off the bat, there is a chance you could break something besides the shafts... which might potentially cause collateral damage and claim a shaft. Pessimistic?, yes, but better safe than sorry. Make them strong. I've seen the collateral damage thing happen before, just on 31 spline 9s though.

Would $100 keep you from going 40 spline? You know decisions are made at the margin. :D

Be sure to leave enough $$ in the acct for gas to Moab and back. Oh yeah, and a few choice drafts (NA too) at the Moab Brewery!

I get paid right before I leave so hopefully I'll have enough for everything. I'm only 19 so no drinks at the Brewery for me. :(

I'll let you use my parking spot at the Red Stone so you can sleep in your jeep!:finga:

In all seriousness, if you can't find a room in town I'm sure we can make room for you.

That reminds me, I need to go grab one from the bone yard, and pick up some power steering fluid.

If you cant find a place I will have a campsite, and gear (tent air mattress, sleeping bag etc) you can use. I am staying in the Slickrock campground.

And showers. The water going down the drain is usually red from dirt and dust after a day on the trail for me.

Changed all the fluids, and rebuilt my bent/rusted right slider. I've got to fill the CO2 tanks tomorrow, and fix my spare mount but otherwise it looks ready to go.

Oh yeah, turn the rotors on the front, and inspect all the brakes.

It might be nice to vacuum out the red dust/dirt from last year.

Still waiting on winch stuff. Looks like I'll be installing it this weekend or Mon. at the latest. I've nixed the onboard welder for now. Gota call Keith & get the ready welder in case we need it.

Got all the bracketry tacked on the the 9".....tomorrow will be fully welding everything, setting up gears, figuring out the disc brakes, and then paint. Today was a slow process since I had to fix the control arms, they are bent for high-clearance, but one rotated and the joints were a PITA to break loose...lots-o-rust. I'll be running them with the bends down, to help protect the DL more.

Lookin' great, Scott.

My WK is almost done - need to install the winch and if time permits, fab up the fender liners.

I keep meaning to do that too, lol. How much does it suck for Keith that his welder goes to more GSW's than he does? LOL The new tires look awesome too!

I thougth I was all ready, took the tow rig and the ZJ in to have a lube, oil and filter change and check all the fluids and check the A/C charge.

Now the ZJ is getting a new A/C Compressor installed. Dang there goes the beer money I saved, but us old pacific northwestener need our comfort if it gets warm!! :D

My new tie down straps arrived, so when the ZJ comes home the only think left will be to go pick up the loaner trailer and load the ZJ. The it is Moab and on to Rubicon and the trails around there if I can connect with some people there.:finga:

Good news is I just picked up my drive shafts, bad news was there goes $400. GSW better be on hell of a trip this year to justify the cost of all the upgrades I did this year: Long arms, ADCOS, new axles/gears, lockers...

True dat for Keith and his welder. He isn't coming, bummer. Yep cool tires Scott! You and Ryan are twins.
I got new front LCA bushings in, what a diff in the ride and all the clanking is gone! A few odds and ends this weekend and I'm all set.

Add checking the tranny pan bolts to the list of fasteners to check. I was missing one and several others were loose. My dad's were loose as well.

The ZJ goes in tomorrow for a front end alignment now that I have the new tie rod ends on, steering gear box, and custom trackbar built and tested. Yea! Now for the more minor things...

Well got the rear 9" in, now just to run the plumbing for the brakes and fill the diff with fluid. Then test drive it and head to GSW!

My rear stance is a lot wider now, about 2" on each side. Pics to come in my build thread tomorrow.

Didn't do anything major this year, pretty much the same setup as the last couple of GSW's. New front brakes, new coolant, got everything lubed and tightened, replaced a heim joint on the front upper/lower ca, welded another small crack in the unibody, spot welded the track bar in place (I'm tired of it wiggling around), tossed the K&N and replaced that with an AFE, and put new gaskets on the headers (the old ones just crumbled and fell out). Also I now have bump stops in the front and limiting straps front/rear (hopefully this will take care of that pesky unloading problem).

Oh, I did put in premium leather seats from Pam's ZJ since last year too! :D
