Factory speakers in my truck are about shot, looking to replace them. Put some Alpine Type S's in Pam's ZJ a while back and they seem to be doing really, so looking at doing them in my truck as well.

They've got a great deal going on the 5 1/4" speakers that would fit in the back of my truck with an adapter plate, or there's the 5x7/6x8 that would fit back there as well. Front door takes the 5x7/6x8 as well, but they don't list the 5 1/4's as fitting with the adapter plate. Seems kinda strange, figured they would work there too. Crutchfield lists both front and rear speakers as 6x8 too, dunno why the 5 1/4's won't work.

Current system setup is a Panasonic deck (would power speakers from the deck, no separate amp), and 2 JL 10W0's in a sealed box off a 300W JBL amp.

I can get 2 sets of the 5 1/4's for < $100, everything else is pushing $200.

These are the 5 1/4's: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_500SPS13C2/Alpine-SPS-13C2.html?tp=105

Another set of 5 1/4's, looks like a little different cone and surround: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_500SPS500/Alpine-SPS-500.html?tp=105

Or these in a 5x7/6x8: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_500SPS507/Alpine-SPS-507.html?tp=105

Thoughts? Cody??

i was going to post

"jl audio and don't look back"

but it seems you've already come to the light, so i commend you on your brilliance. you'll have no remorse with any jl audio product (try their door speakers!)

as far as the other speakers, i'm digging the SPS-507, but its up to you...the SPS-13c2 seem very nice for the price, obviously the best value speaker as well.

Oh believe me I've been a big JL fan for as long as I've owned a car, but their speakers are bit more than I'm looking to spend right now.

sound quality is relative the the listener.

ford makes it hard because I generally hate all oval speakers, but 5.25's suck too. If you're going to run a sub in the back, then 5.25's would be ok. You can get 5.25" components for the front, then something similar in a 2 way for the back (or nothing at all. I ran no rears in my dodge but I had a big JBL/Crown 600 x 2 amp pushing my front JBL GTI components and it made more than enough noise).

For simplicity, picking up a decent set of 6x8's works ok for most people. There are lots of speakers of similar quality that will have slightly different sound to them, it's up to you to decide what sounds better to you. Alpine type S, Polk DB's, Infiniti reference, JL, Boston Acoustic, Kicker, etc etc all make speakers in that $100 price range that are fairly comparable.

Is your truck a 4 door or just a club cab or whatever? If it were me, I would spend more money on a better set of front components, and run them off of an amp. Disconnect the rears or run something like those cheaper alpines, and fade it all forward a bit so the rears are just a little bit of filler.

Hey - I get to post another "everything is fucking made in China!" :D

I just went through this shit about 2 months ago looking for new speakers for the 951. Most speakers are made in China now and it is really fucking difficult to find any that aren't. There is one notable exception - MB Quart. If you know what you're looking for, you can still find their German built ones. I believe all of their DKG series are made in Germany. I ordered from here: http://www.sonicelectronix.com/cat_m41_i465_mb-quart-car-audio-and-video.html

Just be careful - the ones that say "German Engineered" on the box are made in China. You're looking for the ones that say "Hand built in Germany". For the 6x8, DKG-168, $65/pair: http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_8909_MB+Quart+DKG+168.html

They've got the 6.5"s on sale for $50 too, looking into what needs to be done to make those work in my truck.

I'd LOVE to go components, but then my mids and highs and will overpower the lows, and then I'll need new subs, bigger amp, new box, and more money gets taken away from other stuff.

They don't have any 6.5" DKG series in stock - they never do. I really wanted to order a set too - it would have only taken a little trimming to get them to fit. The 6x8 should be a drop-in and they have them in the DKG series. I really like how they mount the crossover components on a circuit board which fit into a slot built into the basket.

I got some 6.5"s into my front door. I took a set of 5.25 adapters and cut them up and got something to work. My 6.5 baskets allllmost fit into the door as it was, they only needed to be spaced out maybe 1/8" and the adapters took care of that.

I'm running a set of CDT CL-61 components up front, its just a 6.5 low/mid and the tweeter. I have a single 10" elemental designs sub in the back, an autotek 4 channel amp, 2 channels running the components at something like ~90 RMS and the other two bridged to the sub run down to 2ohms for like ~350 RMS. Pretty good balance, not much of the highs overpowering the lows, depends on how much bass you want though. I had two MTX 12s in the ZJ, so I've kinda been there/done that on the bass thing.

I have my sony headunit powering the stock speakers in the rear doors. I used to run only alpine receivers, but my last alpine got jacked and at the time i was broke so i snagged the sony out of crutchfield's scratch and dent for like $140. I'm pretty happy with the system and get compliments from people riding in the truck on how good it sounds.

Also built some custom tweeter mounts out of the stock sail panels:

I can't remember, you have the crew cab right?

i've always been a fan of pioneer 3 way speakers. good sound for a decent price.

I've only seen a handful of sets of real 3 way speakers (usually the 3rd (or even worse, 4th) tweeter is just plastic for show), and I've never heard one I liked.
