I just picked this truck the other day as a tow rig. Was bored and looking on craigslist, and had my eye on this one for a while so I figured I go test drive it. I ended up buying it. I need to stop looking on craigslist, I did the same thing for my 5speed zj.

4x4, extended cab short bed slt
Power puck
3rd gen rims
2 inch leveling kit
2 10" subs under the back seat
spray in bed liner
etc. etc.

I need to stop looking on craigslist

Same here, there are 2 trucks that I've been looking at that I'm really considering on buying 1 for a DD/Tow rig.

But awesome find!

Nice truck.

Some advice... Keep it stock... otherwise it'll be a MASSIVE money pit, far worse than a ZJ ever could be.

Quick question, anyone have huskyliners in their rigs? I'm going to pick up a set for the front two mat's since the ones it came with are torn up. Where's the best place to get them?

When I got them for my Jeep, Cabelas had the best prices.

Just had to post this.

Stopped to get some food at wendy's and the first thing out of the lady's mouth was 'Can you turn your truck off, I can't hear you at all.' Hahaha.

Good lord. Tag fee's are expensive here.

150 for HUT
40 titling fee
133 for 13k lb weighted tags.

Out the door for 337.

Ouch!

I thought Alaska was expensive at $100 for 2 years. Idaho is ~$60 for 2 years.

Went through all the service records included the other day and found some interesting stuff. The clearance lamps were purchased separately and installed by the dealer a couple years after the original purchase. I also found a build sheet. Included on it were such things as "Trailer tow group, heavy duty snow plow prep, limited slip in the d70, 34 gallon tank (although for some reason I have an almost full tank after 20 gallons)," etc. etc.

Anyone know what all is included in the snow plow prep group? Odd thing was it was sold first in Charlotte, NC.

I think the plow package gives you a beefier alternator and front springs

nate

Tank is 34-35 gals.

Plow package is stiffer front springs and maybe beefier alternator... don't remember for sure.

Yeah, it's a 34 gallon tank. I've seen post where people mention taht they have this issue, but never a post to resolve it.

Any suggestions?

Towed a buddy's spec miata the other day.

Couldn't even tell it was behind me, except my steering felt looser than Elliot's twat.

That picture is from my LG dare, by the way. I finally figured out how to get pictures off the damn thing.

Speaking of steering, does anyone have a blow up of the steering on these things? I'm trying to replace draglink and TRE's, but Rockauto.com makes that ish confusing as crap.

Check the trac bar first. They are notorious for going bad on these trucks.

Check out http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/dev/index.php

Tons of good info there. I put a DSS brace on my steering box and conversion mount for the trac bar to let me run a 3rd gen trac bar.

I'm over on dodgeownerforums.com and they suggested checking the track bar as well. I checked it and the only joint that was moving a significant amount was the TRE on the driver side knuckle. I'm probably just going to replace that and see how much it helps. I've now started leaking coolant, so I'll have to toss money at that too.

Check the steering shaft as well. The one on my '01 isn't too bad but the shaft on my '03 is screwed. Got a Borgsen on order.

nice truck :smt004

3rd gen track bar is a good one, I run the DT Pro fab bar as another option. DSS was also a good addition to my truck. And I think the steering shafts had a recall on them. So yea definitely another thing to look at. And if you wanna go even further into it.. 3rd gen boxes can be retrofitted to fit the 2nd gens and people seem to really like those.

And I agree with what was stated a while ago.. friggin money pits :pissed:

Thanks.

And...

Son of a bitch. I get back in town and head over to my girlfriends place. On the way I pegged out at 240 before my Check Gauges light came on. I've got a serious coolant leak now. AWESOME. I get done with 8 hours of driving, only to come home to a fucked up truck.

Lucky Jeff
12-31-2008, 01:26 AM
that sucks.. Good thing about these things is it's real easy to change the headgasket. Throw some studs in there while you're at it.. So far mine with the stock head gasket, studs and almost 20* timing has held 64 psi. I turned down the fuel a little though and try to stay around 55-57 psi. 60+ is pushin it on studs only.

all the gaskets are about 175 from cummins, studs are 425 and resurface/valve job isn't mandatory, but should probably be done.

spykosshow

I don't think the head gasket is blown, it had the leak before the overheat. I noticed the leak last thursday, I left town saturday-yesterday, and then when within 10 minutes of driving it was pegged. I checked the coolant level and it was about half way down the radiator. I filled it and it didn't overheat from where I had to stop back to my apartment, ~10 minutes.

Lucky Jeff
12-31-2008, 05:45 PM
so where is the leak coming from?

spykosshow
01-01-2009, 12:08 PM
It's the WP.

http://www.enterpriseengine.com/Partsproducts/partsa10.jpg

That pic is a good picture of where the wp is on the 5.9 (this pic shows an electric one). Where the block curves down and then flat, there is a puddle of coolant.

Anyone think this is hard to change out?

Lucky Jeff
01-01-2009, 01:45 PM
it's not difficult at all no.. But it is stuck in there pretty good, you'll have to pry it out of the block once you take those two bolts out...

cLAYH
01-01-2009, 03:29 PM
Just did the HG on my '01 last month. Was leaking coolant from the front passenger corner where the head meets the block. Just behind the alt. Might want to have a look back there and look for coolant tracks. Pretty common on these trucks when they get a bit older and are bagged on.

spykosshow
01-02-2009, 12:31 AM
I just unbolted the two bolts, put a wee bit of pressure on the pump, and it fell out. The weep hole was packed with stop leak it looked like. It kept overheating, so I changed out the tstat too and now it seems to be fixed.

Lucky Jeff
01-02-2009, 03:12 AM
good to hear.. Guess you got lucky (Or I was unlucky). Mine was a pain in the ass to pry out.. It was a little easier though since I had the whole front of the truck ripped apart.

Just wanted to mention don't mess with Napa, Scmuck's, etc parts... get the actual Cummins parts. Yes they are more $$ but aren't shit like the parts store stuff.
