View Full Version : Denver Caravan to Moab

A few of us are planning on heading out Wednesday afternoon sometime. We'll be ready to roll around 1:00 I think. Krash and Putz will be driving in from IL and should be ready to go about the same time if their plans go as planned. Anybody else from CO heading out Wednesday? Or coming through Denver from somewhere else on Wednesday?

Where everyone is coming from will determine a meeting place, but probably somewhere along 470 or up 70 a little bit.

Our goal is to be in Moab by 7 or 8 so we're able to get the trailers unloaded and grab something to eat before it gets too late.

Currently I plan to leave ~4pm Thursday. I guess I'll be part of the second wave.

Clan Karlin intends to be on the road around noon on Thursday. Maybe this year I won't be scrambling to get checked in to the hotel and then getting to the M&G

I'll be leaving Wednesday too, but not sure on the time yet. In an ideal world around the same time you are planning. Will keep you updated as departure time gets closer.

I can try to leave earlier if we want to try to do a thrusday caravan.

How fast does everyone drive? I start to get some vibes ~70mph so I try to below that. I might pull my front driveshaft for the trip down to see if that cures it (and maybe better milage).

fpkites
05-01-2008, 07:51 PM
We generally drive 5 over - I'm thinking about pulling the front shaft too - not a bad idea.

My vibes are at 60-ish, and end around 70 :D

I may be in. I was planning on leaving Wednesday at noon, so 1ish on the highway would be cool. I am camping so I wanted to be there in the daylight, but I can setup in the dark.

I doubt you guys want me to join the caravan. The mighty 4.0 probably wouldn't be up to keeping the staggering speeds you guys blaze at (a.k.a. the speed limit).

You should be able to fly on the downhill stretches Matt

We may be able to leave a bit before 1pm. it will depend on the guys though because my sorry ass will be taking a securities exam that Wednesday morning. i'll be done no later than 11:30 (since it is a timed test at 3.5 hrs and starts at 8am). More than likely, I'll be done prior to that so I'm hoping we can get out of town by noon.

I think our determining factor will be when Ron and Putz manage to show up.

Hey now, I represent that comment!!! Uh I mean....yeah, whatever. Actually this year Ron and I should not be the determining factor!!! We have to wait for Emily to get out of work on Tuesday. So, we'll definitely be a little tired, but at least this time it won't be our fault.

disclaimer: even though Em has to work and we're waiting for her, it's still her fault if we're late because if she didn't tell us we had extra time (i.e. 5pm), we'd say we were going to leave at 6am and actually leave sometime around 1 or 2pm (like last year)...........plus, isn't it about time it's someone else's fault besides ours????

There are three of you....I don't care what time you get in, I'll drag your sorry asses out of bed. The three of you can rotate driving. One sleeps, one drives, one keeps the driver awake. . .

By the time I get home from my exam, y'all best be ready to roll.

What's wrong with Arches by moonlight? ;)

I'm in the 11-ish to 12-ish club too. I figure I'll be up at 7ish and start packing.

Lets rally at the parking lot at I-70 and the Morrison exit (259). I think this is called the T-rex parking lot. Say 11:30am?

Hasn't that become a tradition for Ron to take a minimum of one gay picture every year??? I mean, first it was the pic at Top of the World, then it was at the end of Pritchett last year!! I mean, does any smiley say it better than

Thursday LATE afternoon for me, probably departing from Boulder at 4PM. Since I'm out Friday, I really need to stick around until then.

Well looks like I'll be heading out Wed early afternoon. If we meet on the west side of Vail Pass, then I can keep up. :)

For the Thursday noon people, FYI - the wifey and I are going to take a less conventional route, but only slightly. A guy at work has been bugging me to take the hwy 128 route since it's more scenic than the 191 route. Only adds 25 minutes or so to the trip. Takes us around the east-southeast edges of Arches.

OverkillZJ
05-26-2008, 04:23 PM
It's worth the 25 minutes... Just be careful if you're towing, if you stay on your side of the road the whole time, you WILL hit your rig on some overhanging rocks!

PassRunnerZJ
05-26-2008, 10:11 PM
That is the route I usually go and honestly, I don't think it adds any more than maybe 10 minutes. What you loose in a slightly slower speed, you gain by going diagnal. Seeing the burned up Dewey Bridge will both bum you out and piss you off. The parents of the kids should be paying!!!

It will be cool to see the Colorado at a close to full level in the canyon. It peaked earlier this month at just under 40,000 cubic feet of water per second at the state line to now 26k. By Wednesday/Thursday it should be back up with the warmer weather.

When I was there in April, they said 128 was in pretty poor condition and badly eroded in spots (hearsay). Just be careful.

My departure time is still a bit up in the air.

I will be leaving around 1pm from Denver and taking the scenic route HWY 128 into Moab.

For the Thursday noonish group doing the same route, I might catch up to you, but don't bother waiting, with my sketchy departure time.

How Ironic would it be if you got stuck on 128 on the way to wheel in MOAB!??

Have fun and ditto what cjchamp posted...

And I might catch up to you, depending on how late you leave, John! :D Leaving at 4PM from Boulder, taking 93 through Golden (brief 15-min stop at Slee for CO2 refill). Also quick stop in GJ to pick up brother-in-law Zach + cousin Kyle.

Not looking good for Thursday, and even worse for the bio. I am still working on getting a trailer. If not I may make it with my ZJ packed like last year. I will let you know in the morning what is most likely. What with the ETD again?

BigDaveZJ
05-27-2008, 09:50 PM
No worries on the Bio. We're shooting for 1PM to be on the road and going.

Matt

I am in Broomfield having issues. So I will be heading out who knows when. What times are you Thursday people leaving?

BigDaveZJ
05-28-2008, 09:55 AM
Ken, I'll have your shafts and hubs in the truck too, I'll get 'em to ya in Moab. What kind of issues you havin?

K2
05-28-2008, 09:59 AM
Time issues. I have more to do than pack, and I am way behind. I have to go get a table, mow the yard, install the shocks I bought from Ryan last night (get new bushings for them) to much to do before noon.

Thanks for bringing those for me. Do you still want that drive shaft I cant remember?

fpkites
05-28-2008, 10:01 AM
Ken, we're shooting for noon-ish tomorrow. Thinking meet up at the park-n-ride by heritage square around that time.

BigDaveZJ
05-28-2008, 10:06 AM
Driveshaft is no big deal, but remember your waiver!!

K2
05-28-2008, 10:07 AM
Thanks Jim, we will see how today and tomorrow goes, but I think we were going to head out earlier tomorrow. So if you guys pass a black ZJ on side of the road look for MallCrawlin stickers, it may be me.

K2
05-28-2008, 10:08 AM
I can grab the shaft it is no trouble, and I still have the waiver in the Jeep from when I didnt give it to you at work!

BigDaveZJ
05-28-2008, 10:15 AM
If you got room for the shaft, might as well bring it. Hopefully I'll end up being able to get the square shaft done before I need to use it though!!

Hmm. Called Redstone to confirm, seems I just made reservations for tomorrow night and Saturday night. Guess I was trying to save a few bucks when I made them in February. So. . .I'll drive to Junction tonight and stay with family there.

Zach, Kyle, and I will make the final leg to Moab tomorrow morning!

Not the only thing I forgot to do - I didn't make banquet reservations (though I did manage to grab that extra one AW had). I think I've been working too hard this year. . .

In case anybody's still around, we're leaving within the hour - emergency trip to the doc for the kid (she's okay), and emergency trip to Home Depot - father-in-law is redoing the bathtub tile thanks to mold.

See y'all in wheeling heaven!
