Mark your calendars for May 7th.

"Go ahead and start looking through those old pics of your rig at Tellico and start thinking about those stories you've had. We need them all and we need you to post them at the Rally. In the days to come we will be sending out press releases and getting the media's attention. I will also be giving everyone more information about the area and what's going on."

Awesome. My rig never made it, but my uncle used to take me up to Tellico with him. I've got some pictures too.

UPDATE: Tellico Environmental Impact Findings Released

http://www.cs.unca.edu/nfsnc/nepa/tusquitee/tellico.htm

If you really dig into those .pdfs, they have a ton of information. For example, their findings showed that over half of the drainage dips are not functioning. Seems like you could make the argument that the trails are suffering from these poorly maintained water diversion structures. Repairing those could be a much more desirable alternative to total closure.

Other interesting data:

"The greatest number of sites delivering sediment to streams is occurring on Trails 3, 4, & 8"

"Three bridges were found deficient and needing repair/replacement."

The turbidity graph HERE (http://www.cs.unca.edu/nfsnc/nepa/tusquitee/tellico_turbidity.pdf) is frightening since that was the weekend the trails opened back up.. Although that measurement seems abnormally high given its drastic variance from the other data points in the series and given the reading from later in the day. Like something stirred up a bunch of soil in the water right upstream of the measurement device...?

I'd encourage everybody to browse through that page who has an interest in Tellico staying open.

Ok looking at that chat tells me that tubidity is very minimal. I dont know what the standards are for an area like tellico, but my construction jobsite is an NTU factor of 75 with lots of silt protection in place. I'd say we are doing pretty good up there. The weekend Tellico opend was a rainy weekend. So a spike in turbidity is expected and from the readings it looks to be reasonable. Now that really big spike could have been one dumb ass who found a monitoring staton and kicked up a bunch of silt around it and there you go, high reading. We need to know what they want to see the turbidity at to really know how bad they think it is. I read a bunch of the documents but kind of skimmed through and didn't see any max turbidity.

edit:
My quick online research found that a North Carolina trout stream cannot have NTU factor over 10. But people are trying to change that through the legal system. They want it lower of course.
