Hey old timers...

What trucks came with 8 lug 16" steel wheels stock? Were there any 16x8s or 16x10s that came stock on old trucks? Ideally I want a good bit of backspacing, maybe around 4 or 5 inches. And yes, I know about hummer wheels, not interested in those..

Anybody know?

The Hummer wheels were 16.5" anyway, weren't they?

Wheel diameter is not critical as long they it is greater than 15". So I was really asking about 16" or 17" wheels, as the 16.5 size is gradually getting phased out and there will be fewer tire options for it going forward... Also figured it would be less likely that 17s came stock on a 70s or 80s truck...

That's what I'm going to run.

What part of "steel" can you not read?

Obviously the idea is to grab wheels cheap to weld on DIY beadlock rings.

My local junk yard has a wheel reference book. I just selected the size and created a list for them to search their database. Found a nice set for my sons cars cheap. The reference book includes descriptions and pics so you can limit the list to whatever you want. The can also check online for other junkyards.

My eyes sort of glazed over that part.
My bad.

That is exactly what I'm looking for. Any idea who publishes the book? My local pick and pulls don't have anything but year/make/model of their current inventory listed on their computers.

Sorry no idea, try calling around to various junkyards and ask. Also try non pick-n-pull. The full service (??) junkyards also resell to each other so they need better info. My local guy (Iowa) says he does 60% non-local.

Some ford late 80s earley 90s Ford trucks 250 or 350. Had 16" wheels

Pretty much any 3/4 or 1 ton truck up to recently will have 16s, but they are normally like 6.5" wide.

Could always get some Rock Krawler wheels for like $60 each. Been running a set on my Jeep for 6 years now.

x2 on what nate said. some of the newer dodge 3/4 and 1 tons have steel 17s, too.

Yeah, but those are definitely going to be some fairly narrow wheels.....and from a 1 ton, the backspacing may not work for his application.

i think you will have a hard time getting a 8" or 10" wide wheel with a 8x6.5" bolt pattern with a decent backspacing at a junk yard, i think it will be cheaper to get some black steelies like said earlier

pretty much all 80's 3/4 and 1 ton tucks and vans have 16" wheels, but they are 7"s wide and about 5.5" of bs

Thanks guys, good info.

People are paying $60 bucks a pop for plain wheels? The profit margin on the "Rockcrawler" wheels has to be astronomical. Somebody has a learjet and a ferrari because of all the TJ owners who want "blacked-out" wheels.

Summit used to sell US WHEEL Series 70s in any backspacing shipped for 24.99 each. But their prices are more than double that now.

ZJ TINS, got a name or number for your junkyard with the book?

Try to talk the manager (forgot his name), some of the counter peope are knuckle draggers. They should ship to a salvage yard near you, dont know about direct but you can ask.

Also junkyardsdogs.com. They place your order on a network and you receive bids with descriptions. Course you have to know what you want (size, backspace, hole patterns in this case).

How long ago was that, and in what size? I can totally see that a 15x8 wheel from 5 or 6 years ago could be that price....but the price of steel has tripled in that time frame, and anything bigger than 15" is going to be more, simply because people will pay it.

I ordered four 15x8s, 6 on 5.5 with 2" backspacing (custom order) and they showed up within a week for just over $100 bucks. This was in the spring of 2006.
