I'm just wondering who's bringing what spares. Any advise is appreciated.

I'm for sure bringing the following:

Front inner/out axle shafts w/ bearings
V8 tie rod and drag link
Fluids (oil, atf, coolant, water)

Other stuff I'm considering bringing, mostly cause I have it laying around, but don't know if its worth the effort:

d30 diff cover
another unit bearing
rear drive shaft
d44A axle shafts (If I don't get my 8.8 swap done before GSW)
d44A diff cover

Things I need to buy for spares:
serpentine belt
gear lube

Definitely a good idea to have all fluids, D30 shafts are a must, front drive shaft is a fairly good idea, but not absolutely necessary. Basically, if you've got the spares, bring 'em. You never know what you or your trail mates will bust.

I'll definitely be making a junkyard run to see if I can find another front shaft and some D30 shafts. Can't go wrong with drivetrain spares...that's what gets yer ass off the trail.

All 4 spare axleshafts (fronts have hubs already attached), spare u-joints, and plan to have a spare driveshaft that will work either front or rear ready by then as well. Also have pretty much every fluid I could need to get my rig off the trail. Another big thing is a selection of nuts and bolts, they can help a LOT with suspension issues.

Dave, was that Cody's or your box of bolts you spread out on Poison Spider last year? That was a shit-ton of nuts and bolts.

That was mine. Ammo can full of assorted nuts and bolts I've acquired over the years.

It's always good if someone has a spare ZJ steering box. Most years someone breaks a box.

I think for the first time in a long time last year no one broke a box.

Exactly what I was thinking.

One thing that'll definitely be in my kit is hockey pucks - came in handy on Gold Bar last year for Z's brother :D

Kevin broke a sector shaft on Thursday, so I kinda guess nobody broke a box at GSW.

Every group should have one with them. I would sure save a lot of trouble.

I'll have a full EMT jump kit this year - wifey will have her national certification mid-May :cheer2:

I'm tempted to also bring along the best of the stock control arms I pulled yesterday. You never know.

You know I have always wanted a defribulator (spelling) to carry in the Jeep. cool.

Could've actually used one last year from what I remember.

Ready Welder

That one's my favorite!

Maybe we could convert the welder in to a combo welder/defribulator.

do your ears get that dirty?

I've come off the trail in Moab covered from head to toe in red dust.

i figured it was one of those things that happens when you go to moab, but you never know unless you ask...he could have a ear cleaning obsession or something. but i know that when youre in uwharrie you can get the same way with the dust there.

One important thing I forgot to mention SNACKS

Water
WJ: tie rod, drag link, every TRE
Cooler for the water and ice
Booty bag full of bolts and nuts. Seems like someone always breaks a bolt
More water
8.8 shafts
Extra water, it can be very hot on the trail, mountain bikers will ask for your water
Spare tire. Obvious, but some don't think you need one.
Floor jack, much nicer then a High Lift when changing a tire or working on the Jeep

John, don't forget water :D

Last year on PS, Dave was patching up Cody's LAs and went "Damn, a floor jack would be really nice right now"

Arlo pulled his Heep up to Cody's and said "Like this one?"

:D
There's those out there who don't think they need one, and there's me, who needs two!!

And X eleventy billion on the water. You can never have enough out there. In 02, the hottest GSW on record, I went through an entire 24 bottle (12 liters) case of water in one day, and still wasn't fully hydrated.

How the fawk you carry 3 spare tires on the trail????

redline61

Don't forget the twelve point bolts that hold in the front wheel bearings. Seems like every time I see a shaft repaired out on the trail someone destroys one or two.

How the fawk you carry 3 spare tires on the trail????

well i got one in my jeep, 2 in the garage unmounted, just took them off my jeep and got new front tires. i need some rims to put them on. i could put one in the stock placement(like mine is now(32" mtr)) and then one on my rack up top, and one on the KOR rear carrier that i'm getting...

i'm gunna give one of the spares away, and keep one and get a rim for it so i'll only really have 2 spares, so we'll be even:smt086

Jeeperoni91
04-08-2008, 07:48 PM
come to think about it, i got a 33" MTR in the garage too. and it's not on a rim either:rolleyes:

BigDaveZJ
04-08-2008, 07:58 PM
Well if you're counting every tire in your possession that's not currently in use I've got 6, but the only ones that do me any good on the trail are the ones I've got with me.

Shit, since I'm driving to Moad on my 31's (plus a spare) and carrying my 33's I guess I've got 6 spares too. I'm debating if I should drag a small trailer or try to cram them all inside somehow.

Get a trailer with 5x4.5 bolt pattern and you'll have even more spares! I ended up using my trailer spare last year to get the ZJ on and off the trailer after I gave Scott his spare back.

1 x 28", 4 x 31", 1 x 33" for spares:D

Extra spares tires are heavy to carry if you already have a load of other spare parts, unless...
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/8/8e/Landmaster.jpg/250px-Landmaster.jpg

I figure a trip like Hole in the Rock where you are two days in is worth two quality spares, plus a patch kit, tire pump, and on and on. If I count my set of 31's plus a spare I have seven spare tires as long as I don't use the locker if I mix.
