i dont see why you could not use one, they are heavy, and have a long wheel base, the only issue i assume you would have would be the high center of gravity.

It depends on the camper van!

No idea, but it's just like any other tow rig, some are half tons, 3/4 tons, 1 tons, some are diesel, some are gas, some are short, some are long. The same rules for all other tow rigs apply, but campers are heavier from the start, and often only get 8MPG when NOT towing.

I don't even want to know what kind of mileage you'd get!

my neighbor has one he hauls his aspen drag car with... 8-9mpg not towing, 6-7 towing & if ya pull any hills, he's 2nd gear redline & 40mph... When he goes to the drags &/or Rausch Creek (with me), we take the ctd...

Don't get a VW Eurovan. That wouldn't make for a very good tow rig...:D

My dad used to do this with a E350 chassis motor home in the 80s. It was an 84 IIRC with a 460. His was pretty long. Beside the fact that it was slow in the mountains it did really well. It was hardly noticeable except again for the hills. The gas mileage didnt change too much except for longer trips in the mountains. The new V10s do even better. You just need a little patience on the long hills. Otherwise I would bet you could run the speed limit in most flat areas. When the motorhome was not pulling anything it would actually power brake and chirp the duallies. It would also run up and down the mountains at 60 or so with out much trouble. If you want or need the motorhome then I would do it.
