It also got a full sound system at this point with a Panasonic 70x4 head unit, 2 Alpine type R's, MTX 500W amp, 4 Sony explode 240W speakers, and a rocksford fosgate capasitor.

Did you install the fender flares your self? How did you seal the gaps in the rear fenders? Did you use expandable foam like they say to in the instructions? Clean looking ride by the way, that berserk bumper looks awesome:driving:

Ok so here is whats up. I did not install the flares myself (which is the only thing i havent done on it) But what the install pictures look like pretty much explains it. You cut it away and leave the underside of the sheet metal a little bit long and fold it up and tack weld it. Then use the expandable foam. The reason I didn't install them is because i dont have a welder. I did paint everything though, including the hood. I will get some more pictures of the hood on in the next couple of days. Im also going out to little moab this coming up saturday so I will post some more pictures.

I actually like the original hood scoops better, but that's just me.

grandmaster
03-03-2008, 06:34 PM
Well the original hood scoops werent real. I wanted something that was real to let the heat out so it would operate at a cooler temperature and keep all the hoses, belts, etc in better condition for a longer life.

I figured that, but I would have cut them out to make them functional.

Have no clue what all thats about but good luck solving it. Yes I thought about cutting them out, but they are still stick on and they were starting to come off anyways. My hood was fading so I decided to by the louvers, cut the hood then repaint. But anyway it used to run right at 210 now it runs just below that, so whatever that mark is.

one thing i also noticed is the location of your steering stabilizer. you might want to locate it up a little more as having them hang down in front of the diff like that makes them prone to getting owned by obstacles.

you got to get to a junk yard to get a 96 and up grill

Yeah i thought about that and decided not to because the winch covers up the part that the bumper shows. Any other differences? And I dont think it will bolt right in, will it? or will I need to fab something up?

Can you elaborate a little on your "home built" d-ring mounts?
Are you talking about the ones on the front? I just got some steel, 2 plates and welded a tab at the 90 degree angle to the other plate and bolted it to the front of the bumper which is hooked to the winch plate. The d rings are a miltary d ring that holds like 6 tons, they are a small hole to drill to, thats why I chose them. And they have held up good, pulled me out a couple of times.

Rear bumper should be red too

Its steel and so the paint chips really easy thats why I chose not to paint it read. I know this because the front winch plate was red and got chipped from rocks hitting it on the road.

Yeah its a dual steering stabalizer from rustys offroad, I used to have DW but got that problem fixed and have never taken it off. I dont know if you can tell in the picture but it is pretty beat up ha ha. But i took it off and it still works, so until it stops working it will remain on.

damn that things clean...you dont see any jeeps that clean down south:D you should paint your cladding the red like your jeep...that would look freakin slick as hell man.

Yeah, I try and take care of it, but what you dont see is my rocker panel is a little beat up. Need some sliders. Anyway thought about painting it red, but it will be coming off eventually and be getting bedlined, so im not going to waist the money on paint. (its like 120 dollars a quart, plus paper, tack rags, and every other supply, so i dont think its worth it.

ok, fwiw I really do like your rig and to each his own....however....whats with the huge storage shelf? looks like it blocks your view and seems to be a little hazardous in a roll situation...and I woould delete the plastic loredo siding and rocker gaurd and replace with sliders and leave the doors red....that would complete the black/red look...
Also is it common to have engine temp issues with the 5.2? is that why you chopped your hood? (i Really dont know, not being a smart ass) I do like the cosmetic hood louvers thogh really make the front look mean!
overall  good job on doing it yourself!

no it wont, but im sure it wouldn't be hard to do. just cut the plastic under the grill, and make some brackets... or you could just buy the grill support too from the yard.

The shelf is kind of big, but does not block the view what so ever. It is anchored down to the floor by little hook thing (cant think of the name right now) So its not going anywhere. Planing on getting rid of the plastic on the rocker panel and painting with black bed liner then installing my sliders. I dont have a 5.2 i have a 4.0 (make a difference) thanks for the comments though, I like to see what other people think of it. Also have a question, anyone think I should paint by front bumper black with bedliner, what about the flares? And im leaving the plastic siding, Isnt there holes under them? I may even paint those black.

Yeah I might look into doing that then in the next few months, money is tight right now.

Update: installed some rock lights tonight, just need to get them wired, will post up some pictures when its all done.

If you are asking for opinions, I think the paint looks good! I'm not into red on trucks (or Jeeps) but yours looks good with the matched flares. No, I don't think there are any holes under the pontoons, just little pegs you would have to grind off and repair with paint and such (no welding). I think that it would be a knockout with out the cladding, and the rear bumper painted, but bed liner and pontoons are durable too.

jeeperanthony
03-12-2008, 09:07 AM
in my 98 there were a few, but nothing bondo couldn't fix (if you can't/won't weld) I vote take the plastic off.
Looks nice and clean btw.

So are you saying to take all the platic off and leave it red? Or leave it on and bedline it? or Take it off and bed line it? And the Rear bumper will be staying bedlined not red. It is steel and the paint chips really easy, and i dont want to constantly be painting it.

And bob that tailpipe before the rocks do!

Ha ha funny you mention it, When i went out I slammed it on a rock and pretty much crushed it to half its size. So now it needs to be cut off. Which brings me to my next point. Would you cut it after the muffler, or just cut the tip off? I believe for it to pass inspection the exhause has to exit behind the bumper/or side of the vehicle.

jeeperanthony
03-12-2008, 01:45 PM
i say leave it red, even color match it, i just dont really like the color matched fenders with the un-color matched plastic

I would paint the plastic siding the same color as you painted the Iceland Offroad flares. Definately leave the beadliner on the rear bumper, my rock rails look like shit after 8 months of just having paint on them. The paint just doesn't stand up to all the stones the tires kick up.

Picked up my 231 with SYE 2 saturdays ago. It is currently in dust collection phase until i get my rear claytons kit. I will be doing my 8.8, tcase, and longarms all at the same time. Also, will be ordering some rock sliders from rocky road in about 2 weeks, and then its another 3 week wait on top of that.

grandmaster
03-26-2008, 12:23 AM
That actually looks decent. I actually never really noticed but tyler did the same thing but he did his fenders in the bedliner to. The only thing im pissed about is that i spent $120 on paint to paint those flares, and now im just going to be covering them up with bedliner. Because personally i dont htink it will look to good if i just to it in black on the sides without doing the flare to. And then my bumper is still red, which means it would go from black rear bumper to black side, to red front bumper? Im really just debating

Update: Sorry been really busy haven't been able to post up lately. Got some rock lights intalled. They are somewhat like the "round eyes" brand but are called "bright eyes". It is one, one watt LED light, and it is bright as shit, but unfortunatly i will not be posting up pictures of them on because the camera i have is a piece of shit and doesnt take night pictures ha ha. Also installed a CB and antenna, which i will be wiring today....And I bought the 5 point bar tyler was running because he is starting his internal cage, so i will be sure to post up the pictures of that between today and tomorrow.

Thank you, the bar is anchored by 2 bolt on either side. The top one uses the stock seat belt hole, and the bottom one uses the hole under it, it is already threaded, its pretty much a pointless hole, dont really even know why its there.

yeah i got it last winter but never had time to work on it because of football. Now this year i should have some time. I mean, its not going to be much different then what you see now, probably going to paint it all black or camo. It will have 2 seats in it, and the roll cage will be welded in and tied to the frame somehow. Its got a small block chevy in it and it runs great, but the steering on it is a bit questionable. The winch is PTO so its driven off the motor, honestly for 500 bucks i dont think i went wrong.

Well, went up to 5 mile pass to run rattle snake yesterday evening and got back around midnight. Fun trip and everything worked out good, only carnage was a broken mirror, and rolled back off a ledge and landed on my front bumper (which is fiberglass) hard. All it did was scratch up the paint and put a little gouge in it. needless to say, its some strong shit.

Also the first time i got to try the rock lights and sliders, and i must say they are a great combonation together. The sliders exceded my expectations. Unfortunatly i forgot my camera at home, so i was unable to get any pictures. Plus it was raining so it was extremely muddy, and also very dark because all the clouds.

Update as far as whats in progress... Just picked up some used spidertrax from summit machine here in draper for 100bucks for 4., all in great condition. Next purchase will be here in about a week or 2. Which will consist of brackets for the 8.8, a 4:1 kit. Also, a question for ya my 231 has 79,000 miles on it from the previous owner. Should a do a rebuild on it with new chain, seals, and whatever the hell else is in it, or should i just leave it. I had him right me a reciept and he said it works perfectly, so i shouldn't have a problem.

I'm not bashing here, just inquiring...

What's the point in the 5-point harnesses? It seems like, without a cage, it'd be a bad thing to be constrained in your seat, sitting straight up in the event of a rollover. The driver or passenger wouldn't be able to lean to avoid being crushed by the roof potentially crushing.

why did that guy stick his leg out if the door? seriously? Nice build, fiberglass bumpers scare me a bit, love the new hood louvers, i hate those stick on, non functioning plastic scoops, looks to much like a mexi honda or something, or a lowered 4x4 F150. Build looks good, if you keep wheeling it, the paint won't matter soon! Like the rear bumper, it's clean, straight, and does the job. Good job Tyler, how much for one? lol. Have you looked in to regearing?

Yes the fiberglass bumper holds up amazing, was backing off a ledge to take a better line at five mile last week and come down HARD on the front bumper, all it did was chew up the paint and took a tiny chunk out of the bottom, nothing too noticable or anything that worried me. And for those of you that dont know, fiberglass is probably one of the easiest things to repair if it really gets to that point. And yes, rear bumper has been tagged several times and has done the job. Tyler is on here under crawlerready.

i'm not entirely sure, but it might also help prevent this...

Ha ha that guy is retarted!!

What he said, watch the video. You can still move, just a lot safer then a regular seat belt.

Like everyone else i definitally like ur ride looks mean and capable but not like a POS like some rigs. Lot of ur mod im hopefully goin to do with my WJ however being 16 money is tight. Keep up the awesome build! :D

Thanks a lot, seems to do the job for me, especially with the stock control arms. And as far as your build is going, get as much done as you can now. Because now that im going into college i will have NO MONEY so you really wont be able to do anything.

But im going to tear down the axle Thursday and put new bearings, seals, and all that good stuff in it, as well as make sure it is straight. Pretty much just tore down the 8.8 and got it all cleaned up, had to order bearings and shit because i forgot about them, but they will be picked up tomorrow. Got the t-case out, which was a pain in the ass because the lowest nut was stripped out and then wouldnt turn so i had to grind the stud and all off of it. Wont start working on it again tell monday. I plan on getting the new t-case in with the tera 2 low installed, and hopefully get the axle put back together and get the d35 out. I will try and remember to get pictures and keep you updated.

Sorry for the shitty pictures ha ha... Everything "frame" side is ready to be welded up, which i plan on getting to tomorrow. Then the axle will go under and get ready for brackets and tubes welded. After everything is the way it need to be the gears, seals and bearing will go in.

The tcase is laying apart because i swapped input shafts and im putting new seals in it... and here is the lame part. The SYE on the 231 is made by Currie, the seal in it doesnt have a number, just says Currie. Went to napa and they dont have anything like it, so i called currie and it turns out they are the only ones who make the seal, so I ordered it and it will be here friday, so i will plan on putting the tcase together then.

grandmaster
08-17-2008, 08:26 PM
I dont think they look that bad, but they dont look good by any means. I guess its the 12 bucks for the mudflaps, or getting pulled over and getting fix it tickets, paying for the ticket if you get pulled over several times, or not passing inspection. Better safe then sorry. I agree on the gas tank tuck but wont be happening until its a dedicated wheelin rig. So were looking at about another 6 or 7 years.

6 or 7 years? man, I'm not that patient. Budget allowing, mine would already be a weekend warrior, but thats not going to happen anytime soon, so I'm stuck with my cheapo lift and fixing the little things for now. I'm trying to find this way to make more money and have alot more free time, so far, no dice. lol.

grandmaster
08-18-2008, 03:11 AM
Well I also have a budget, and a gas tank tuck is not in it right now. There are other things i would like to get done before i worry about that. If anything it will probably get a skid plate to protect it before i worry about moving it up. I have only hit it once though, so im not too terribly worried about it.

you got to love the states were the only lift law is that they have mud flaps. One thing on that 8.8 is that your going to want some diff protection before your first run because it will begin to leak after the first rock you drag it across.

grandmaster
08-18-2008, 12:16 PM
There are actually more laws then that, I am pretty sure they go by frame height and vehicle weight. As I recall frame height can be 24" if your vehicle is over 4800 pounds. I'm not sure if that is right or not, but they also go by headlight height and bumper height.

I am looking into getting a Solid diff cover (they seam to be cheapest), but it probably wont be before my first run. So I will just have to be careful my first few runs so i dont rip my diff cover off.

Cody
08-18-2008, 12:28 PM
the headlight and bumper height restrictions are old news. It's now frame to ground, based upon GVW. You're allowed 24" for a ZJ.

Tires must be covered completely on the sides by flares, and the top 50% of the must be covered by a flap or body panel. I've been too lazy to deal with flaps, and I have about 1% of my back tires covered. I just roll the dice whenever I drive it, but I only drive it to and from a trail so I'm not exposed to too many cops looking for a reason to pull people over.

damn you gotta love Montana, no emissions/inspection laws, and you can drive around with no doors or mud flaps and not get hassled at all.

Kansas too, only thing we have is legal minimum/maximum on bumper height. The max is absolutely recockulous...no ZJ should be that high...I think it's like 54", lol.

grandmaster
08-18-2008, 04:00 PM
Well mine being my DD and weekend wheeler i have a bit more trouble, and in St. George it was even worse for me. And I honestly think you could go about 24" and be fine, i haven't once seen them measure when i have taken mine in (even though im not that high). Cody do you know how high bigger trucks are like cummins mega cab and the F350's?? I see people driving around with 13" of lift and 37-40" tires all the time and never see them get hassled.

Montana or Kansas seem nice right now, don't have to much to worry about at all.

Goosed76
08-18-2008, 08:26 PM
Oregon doesn't have a maximum bumper-height law, but headlights can be only 54 inches from the center of the headlight to the asphalt(seriously, is there a ZJ that tall out there?). Also, the maximum height of a vehicle, with anything on top or loaded, is 14 feet.(Also nothing to worry about with a ZJ), and I can' find anything about a bumper height requirement or frame measurement law for Oregon. But you have to have flares that cover the whole tire, but they are pretty relaxed about it, my 31's stick out with the offset wheels, and my buddies Yota has a whole tread block hanging outside the fender, never been hassled.

dirty
08-18-2008, 08:32 PM
Ewww, your right...it might be headlight height in Kansas now that I think of it...anyways, still thats the only rule.

In most any other state I'd still need fender flares, mudflaps, to lose my tint, a catylitic converter, and maybe have to lower a few inches. I read about some state where 3 inches is the max you can lift anything. But alas, we have no f'n rocks...so I have to travel to get to those.

Goosed76
08-18-2008, 08:35 PM
Yeah, just found a law that says that the tires must be covered from 20" off the ground and up, so, basically, a mud flap law, I might be illegal with my 3" lift and 31's, lol. Sad.

intresting exhaust route....

hows it clear at flex?

grandmaster
08-22-2008, 02:22 AM
It was hitting on my drive shaft so i took it back to master muffler and they re- routed it, then at full droop on the passenger side it hit the upper control arm so i took it back and they lowered it about 2 inches. Haven't been out with the current setup so i dont know how it will work yet. The pictures of the new route arent posted..

zj95
08-22-2008, 01:17 PM
yeah most route the pipe above the passanger upper control arm instead of below

grandmaster
08-22-2008, 08:56 PM
But im only at 3.5" of lift and my control arms are already hitting on the body (tub) where the rear seats are located. Before i hooked up my shocks i jumped on the back to dent in the area so there would be room for the control arms to move. So there was really no room for it to be routed above the control arms until i go higher

piku303
08-23-2008, 02:03 PM
count on it being dented a lot more after more trail usage. why so low?

BigDaveZJ
08-23-2008, 02:30 PM

Why go any higher? You can almost fit 35's with 3.5" of lift and long arms.

grandmaster
08-23-2008, 02:48 PM
I know it will be dented a bit more and that is fine, I was planning on it. I have 33's on it right now with my F>R sring swap and they fit quite nicely. It is "so low" because that is what I had the money to do and didn't have money to spend on adj. control arms.I would like to go up to some 36" tires eventually, running 5.5 or 6" of lift. Need more ground clearance

Ha ha thanks, I love it so far, its a blast to ride and it accelerates really smooth. Its comforatable too unlike other supersport bikes (this is just a sport) your not lying on the tank, your more upright and the weight is off your arms and wrists. Plus this is the cheapest (price) sport bike they make and the top speed is still about 110.

No it wasn't rerouted, it was just bent more... It was hitting on the UCA at full droop so I took it back and had them make the bend bigger and everything works great now. Love it

It takes talent to get hurt on a 250, the only way your going to kill yourself is if you get hit by someone else. Your going to enjoy the 60+ mpg, its a nice change. Well, haven't didn't drive my jeep for 2 weeks then left for christmas break (another 2 weeks) came back and figured I should start my car. Battery is completely dead, unlock button wont even work. Jumped it and drove it around for a little why and shut it off and wouldn't turn over. Looks like I need a new battery, I am considering optima...if I do would you suggest red or yellow top? For winching and some sound system around town when I decide to drive it.

Just charge your battery...although driving around helps charge your battery, your alternator focuses more on the electronics of your car while running. So giving your battery a charge by driving it around isn't always the best solution unless you drive it for hours. Pull the battery and put it on a 2amp trickle charge for ~6hours and you should be good to go. I'd try that before spending the $$$ on a new battery.

The hood, fenders, and front bumper I repainted myself using Dupont's 2 stage paint. The rest is all the original paint, I just wash it regularly and wax it twice a year with the permaseal wax i bought at a car show that works wonders.

I know there is a Checker Auto in St. George, you could always cruise over there and have them charge it. They do a 1 hour charge for free, and it also will test your battery to make sure there aren't any bad cells and that it holds the charge.

Well not really an update....but i don't drive the jeep much here, just my motorcycle everywhere. I started the jeep every now and then and let it run for a bit, but other then that it just kinda sits. So anyway the jeep sounded like it was "missing" and so i replaced all the plugs. While taking the wires off one broke, so I got new wires on it too. Jumped in and it started up with a jump from a friend, 1 minute later it die! Well now the damn thing won't start! it turned over, but i don't know that it was turning fast enough to start (sounded like it was to me...but who knows). Now the battery is the shits, which i had the wrong battery in there to begin with because my last one took a shit and the one i replaced it with is the wrong batter and i don't think it has enough Cold cranking amps to start it like it should. So tomorrow I am gonna go buy an optima so i know i have a good battery at least. Any other suggestions of what i could possibly check/what may be wrong.

Now I need opinions!! Now I think i heard that I can get the U-joint style ones out of a cherokee?? Is this true? If so what do i need to look for and is it really worth it? Sorry for the dumb question....need to swap the damn axle out and do some front LA so I can get with the damn build agin.

Been a looooong time since I have updated this and have made some changes to the ZJ since. Went to Moab for EJS with Tyler (crawlerready) and some buddies and had a great time. Prior to EJS I took off all the cladding and bedlined the sides, front bumper, and all the flares. Looks pretty damn good now...sorry for the delay on all the pictures, been super busy. Also modified my rear bumper for a bit more protection and welded up some tail light gaurds to it as well. After EJS I took the roof rack off and all the lights because one of my cross bars broke durring EJS. Now I just have my hi-lift mounted up there. That's about all that has happened....the shocks I bought were too long so I will be looking for new ones of those soon. Next on the list is a spool for the 8.8 though.

Oh....also bought Tyler's tube doors that will also be going on this weekend before moab.

Alright...I've been promising pictures and I am FINALLY getting around to uploading them and getting them on the site....it's just a few but it will have to do. Things that are changed since last pictures. No rack, lights on front winch, cladding off bedliner on, rear bumper with some beef and also welded the tail light guards on, high lift on top, exhaust cut off, rear bump stops extended and beadlocks.

Here it sits now....

Bought an Aussie yesterday for the 8.8. Should be throwing it in within the next few weeks. See how I like it and how much more capable my jeep gets.

I have a 1" slash in my front passanger side tire on the sidewall and it's got a slow leak. I think it is just down to the cords...and I don't know if it is leaking from there or the beadlock itself. Any suggestions?? Throw some rubber cement in there to clog it up a bit? Fix a flat? Slime??

it usually runs fine

Spray soapy water on it. If your beadlocks are leaking you will prolly be able to hear the air hissing if you stick your head in the wheel. I have to slime one of my tires everytime i switch my beadlocks.

I will tighten all the bolts down again and make sure they are tight. If that doesnt stop it I will try throwing some slime in it and hope it gets on the sidewall and seals it up.

it usually runs fine

My leak was on the rear fortunately so i just jacked it up and put it in gear and let it spin for a while. You can just rotate yours to the rear for a min if its on the front i guess.

Alright...just a quick update that i'm sure nobody cares about. Broke my steering box off the other day after a long day of wheeling. Drove into the parking lot and snapped one bolt and one ear. Should be getting that put in sometime in the next week. Also picked up an Aussie for the rear and will be putting that in soon as well. Other things that will be taking place is straightening the drag link and sleeving it as well as a steering box brace.

Also on a good note, picking up an Edge Juiced with attitude platinum chip on Wednesday for the Truck :)

The only one I had I sold to Brett (Jeeperoni) a while ago ha. I don't have a steering box to make one off of anymore, or I totally would ;)

Alright....a little update but pictures will come later.

New steering box was tapped for hydro assist that I will probably do in a few months (dependent on money) All of it is mounted and ready to go. Ordered and installed a 1 ton steering set up (NOT OTK) and it is pretty beef and replaced my bent drag link :)

I am also working on my steering box brace (hopefully it actually works) and that will be done soon.

Installed the Aussie on Sunday and it's all looking good, ordered and installed a "solid" Diff cover and overall it was pretty easy. Filled it with some synthetic gear oil and tested it ( worked great) then found out my pass. side front Ujoint was broken, so I will be replacing that as well.

On another note, edge chip I installed in truck works great! And for anyone who has one....HOT unlock hauls ass!!
