I need to change my transmission very soon. I don't have a lift, so I want to get a floor tranny jack. Plently of times I've wrestled trannys down onto my chest, but aside form being not much fun, I'm not so young and foolhardy anymore. Besides, most of the ones I've changed were foreign cars with smaller and lighter transmissions. I was thinking about one of the units above from Harbor Freight. Their capacity is 450 lbs. It will raise to 23". $59 + shipping. There is a 1000lb unit that costs $139 (looks more like a conventional floor jack), but it only raises another inch (24"). The next step up holds 2,000lbs, and raises to 31", costs $299.
Anyone have an idea roughly how much a ZJ tranny weighs? And whether the smallest of these jacks is enough?
