Then how about fixing it.
This a simple little mod but from people I've talked with it seems no once else thought of it.

Anyhow, in the summer I really have my doors on. Nice weather, it's a Jeep, my A/C doesn't work. The bad thing is once you take the doors off you loose your speakers, I don't know about anyone else here but I've gotta have some tunes.

So go out and buy some 5 1/4" speakers. I picked up some 120w Panasonic speakers (part# CJ-A1323U, I had these sitting around from my old ZJ).
Then go to your ZJ and remove the kick panels.

Lay the speaker on top and trace it out with a marker (or use the speaker template if the speakers came with one).

Then drill a pilot hole so you can cut the holes out.

After that use a cutting device of your choice and zip the holes out (I used a Rotozip).

Then place the trim ring and speaker into the hole you cut and use the ring as a template for drilling pilot holes to mount the speaker (or use self tappers).

Screw everything down, slap the grills on and your done.

I won't get into wiring because that's easy enough to figure out and most cd players have different colors for the wires (my Pioneer might not be the same as someones Sony). I'll note that I left my door speakers connected in the old ZJ it sounded ok. The door speakers in the new one will be disconnected because they are fired and sound like shit.

Here's a final install (picture from my old ZJ).

Enjoy!
Hope it helps a few people out.

That's an awesome set up! I had thought about doing overhead speakers but didn't like the idea of the speakers right next to my head. This is something I will definitely have to do.

Yea, it worked pretty decent for me and even after swamping the thing out a few times the speakers still worked great.

you could always get a soundbar from a 5.9

That's for the rear though right?

Plus with having a cage done later this year, the sound bar wouldn't work.

I don't even have a working radio in the Jeep. I use it to wheel, not listen to music.

I rarely listen to tunes when I wheel, gotta pay attention.

However, I DD it and the door are always off in the summer.

you know Qlogic makes kick panel replacements that can house 6.5" components right? I just so happen to have a spare set of them too:D

Yes but this was free (this time around).

Just remember those are low and will be prone to getting wet if you wheel in much water. They make marine grade speakers that may work well there, or at least get ones with poly/plastic cones with butyl surrounds.

ooh yeah, especially if you took out the inner fender lining - water shoots straight through the fender and right into that spot.

How does that work out on the passenger side where the fuse block resides?

Owning a 93, my fuse panel is up in the dash so I'm not too worried about water.

I've swampped these speakers a few times in the old ZJ and had no issues.
We'll see how they do in this one.
