This build goes in accending order...the newest pictures are on the last couple pages.

Alright, I'll introduce myself here, my name is Tyler. I'm the owner/operator of Crawler Ready, LLC (http://www.crawlerready.com). Been building Jeeps for as long as I can remember with my family. Started with a '91 XJ when I was 15 and sold it in August 2006 to buy a 1995 Orvis 5.2L.

Here is a list of it current mods:

RK 7" rear springs up front
Upcountry front springs in rear
CR 2" Coil Spring Spacers all around
The Coil Spring Perches add another 2"
Total lift right now is about 6"
40x13.50x17 MTR's
Trail-Gear Creeper Locks

Dana 60 front w/ Yukon 35-spline outers
Detroit
5.38 Yukon gears
Warn Premium Locking hubs

Ford 9" rear w/ Moser 35-spline alloy shafts
Moser Spool
Yukon Nodular Case
5.43 Yukon gears

NP231 T-Case
Six States CV Driveshafts

Trail-Gear Full-Hydraulic Steering
4 Bucket Seats/4-point belts
Custom front and rear bumpers
Custom rock sliders
Custom Internal Cage
K&N FIPK2 kit
Aero Exhaust
XRC-8 Winch

I pulled the ZJ in my garage in December of 2006 and pulled it back out beginning of Feb. 2007 with new axles, t-case, lift, tires, bumpers...figured I'd do it all at once this time. Sitting on 35's and 9.5" of lift (wasn't planning on 9.5" but the spring perches I used added 2.5" over stock) and to say the least I was fairly happy...HOWEVER before you flame me....it's now sitting on 39's and 6.5" of lift ;).

Any questions about it, just ask because I'm sure I left some out.

How it started.

Thanks man, it takes up some room for sure, but I still fit everything needed. ie tools, spare shafts, fluids etc.

Did you fab the suspension up yourself or is it a kit from someone? Can't tell from the pics.

Rig looks good! 6.5" of lift with 37's should work well.

It's the RK 7" LA kit (I know shoot me ;)). I got one HELL of a deal on it from a kid I graduated HS with and couldn't pass it up (~$1000 new). Cody on here is actually the one who finally convinced me to drop it a bit...to be honest, it was pretty stable at 9.5" with that sway bar....but I know I'll be much happier now!

Sweet rig man. Can't wait to see the cage getting built.

Just waiting on the 1.5" die for the bender...I only have a 2" die right now that I used for my Exo-Cage on my old XJ. I figure 2" is a bit large for an interior cage though.

Links...as in...? As for the "frame" brackets, it's all sub-framed now and those brackets are part of it. I don't have any recent pics of that though. I'll get some soon.

ELLLLLIOTTTTT

Gotcha. I was referring mostly to the brackets because I have personally seen those brackets begin to rip out of the unibody framerail. What size joints are those?

BTW, I just noticed the color coordinated air tanks... PIMP! :D

The front is from an '86 Waggy, rear is out of a '95 Rodeo, so it came stock with discs :D

Yeah...stinger is going once the winch goes in ;). I originally built it just to tie in the exo cage, but now that I'll be doing an interior cage, doesn't serve a purpose.

"frame" end or axle end? I assume you mean axle end?....I think it's just the angle I took the picture at because it's not bent.

That's what I was looking at too. I don't know too much about RK's control arms so I don't know if it was intentionally bent for ground clearance or what.

Ah gotcha...sorry guys ;). Yes, they are bent. All 4 lowers are bent for "higher clearance"....kinda a good idea, but even if I tighten the jam nuts as much as I can, they still like to spin to a different direction.

Good deal. I'm sortof in the same boat, trying to cram 33x12.50's on a wj with stock arms and 4" of lift. I cut about 2" of fender out all the way around yesterday but I need to throw the tires on and put it on an RTI ramp or something and measure for bump stops.

I have a mandrel bender....2" die, and 1.5" die is on it's way. The only reason it was like this is because I didn't have a long enough piece to do the bar in one shot. I figured it would only be like this for a little while until I built the interior cage.

As for squeaks, I haven't noticed anything new with it.

WTF is with the washers ????????

I thought the same thing to myself...they actually aren't washers..it's a rubber "bushing" that is apparently required. They came with the TRE's on both sides. I hadn't seen it before either :smt017. Without the use of it, the shank of the TRE starts showing and the nut doesn't tighten it down all they way.

Hurricane 4x4

I think they are to keep the TRE's straight up and down so "at rest" so they don't rotate around and give you a dead spot?

I think its a piss poor looking design. As you put some miles on it let us know how it wears and performs.

Does the taper of the tie rod fully contact the knuckle? I've seen them where you put spacers (grade 8 washers) on the nut side of the tie rod, but not between the knuckle and the tie rod. If the taper is in full contact, it shouldn't be a problem, but if it's only contacting in one spot, it be a big problem down the road.

I'm not sure, I didn't look at that. The TRE's came with a piece of paper that had a picture on it and it showed it like I have them.

I definitely just wrote that very weird...I can't explain it well enough. The TRE doesn't just fall through, just when I tighten down the nut there is just a big gap between the arm and the TRE...almost as if the TRE "housing" isn't large enough itself...I'll most likely be changing this out soon.

Mostly it will just be stuff from other manufacturers....but I'm getting into manufacturing myself. As for metal fab stuff....right now I just do local work and builds because I like to have the vehicle there so that I know the fit is perfect or damn near. I'll start offering that rear bumper on the site for ZJ's though come June.

So I haven't been on this site is quite sometime, but I'll start posting up again since I just got back from GSW and well.....I guess I like you guys ha ha ;).

As for my current setup, it's tough to explain. I've got my 2" spacers all around with no stock isolators up front and I kept the stock isolators in the rear, then RE 3.5" front springs in the rear, RK 7" rear springs in the front, and then I also have 2.5" of lift from my spring perches both front and rear. When I add that all up....well actually I can't add it up because I don't know how it is only 6.5". Either way Cody and I measured it out one day and fully loaded with my tools and my spare in the back it seems to sit at 6.5"

zj95
06-01-2008, 08:49 PM
cool... i have the 3.5 springs out back and 1" spacers no stock isolator.. then i have 7" springs up front with isolator.

the rear is 3/4" higher then the front.

So it seams that RE 3.5 front springs give the rear about 7"... atleast in my case

So it seams that RE 3.5 front springs give the rear about 7"... atleast in my case

Yeah it's a good setup. My rear springs may not even be RE 3.5" springs either...Cody actually hooked me up with them and said he wasn't 100% sure what they were but he thought they might be RE 3.5" fronts. Either way they worked out and keep me sitting pretty level.

kinda late in the game but the rk arms are high clearance, they are flipped in the earlier pic because of what he said no matter what the jam nuts work loose and the arm rotates. The new arms with the rubber bushing on one end arent for a more comfortable ride, they are so the arm doesnt rotate upside down anymore. Im on RK 7 inch coils all around with a 1 inch spacer and isolaters in the rear and teraflex adjustable spacers and isolaters in the front. The RK stuff has been good to me so far, they are also working on their x factor steering to work for us zj guys who are lifting up past 7inches. They have new heims that allow you to mount the knuckle to knuckle tie rod under the knuckle like stock but maintain the same clearance as the heims they used above the knuckle. This allows the use of a misalignment spacer for the draglink. I gotta head down there and grab the new heims and stuff to swap mine out. Anyway back on topic nice ZJ and i wish there was a gsne or something cuz gse is too far south for me.

Yeah, I've got the new arms with those rubber bushings at one end and they still like to flip around ha. I think one of my rear arms goes up and ones goes down....or in or something...

My steering is actually complicated...what exactly are you wondering about it? I have a custom made drag-link, tie-rod....I'm running the stock box with the stock pump. I have hydro-assist as well as a power steering fluid cooler.

sell jeep (or make it a road worth long range rig), build buggy.

If you go this route before you feel the pull of financial responsiblity, you'll already have the buggy and can enjoy it for the years of your life that you shouldn't be dumping $$ into such things.

I hate the lack of zj specific fab parts, ie: self assemble cages/ bumpers etc. I want to build a cage soon but the only thing in my way is a tube bender. The only problem with doing fabrication right now, is I don't have any sort of shop. I do all my fab work in my parents 2-car garage and now that they both drive '07 and '08 Jeeps, they don't like getting kicked out anymore. I will eventually have Crawler Ready fabbed parts (ie. bumpers, sliders, racks, cages...), but for now I just don't have the means of producing that stuff. I definitely appreciate the support from you guys! I won't let you guys down with this ;)

Just threw another set of stockers in for now. Nobody said they could make a stronger shaft for the Izusu D44 since it's imported, it's actually made of a stronger material already. They last a while, and now I just pull them every 3rd trip to Moab and check out if they're twisted at all. I'll eventually get some 33-spline shafts made and throw a Detroit in the back again, but for now this is fine...and cheaper ;)

Yeah, it's a 1984 Honda Z50R...We've owned it since it was brand new. Since I'm the youngest, I kinda inherited it :D. I learned how to ride on this thing and I'm still riding it around haha.

I wish I had some bigger stickers made:doh:. I'm going to hold off on getting any bigger ones made and put the funds into the polyurethane motor mounts. Eventually I'll have some larger stickers, but for now just the smaller ones I've got will have to do

Well....I'm bored at work so I'll update this with what I've got.

Most of you know I'm in the process of another rear axle swap as the D44 I had back there wasn't up to my wheelin' style. After MUCH research, a Ford 9" was going to take it's place.

Unfortunately the Ford 9" 5 on 5.5" lug pattern wasn't going to work for me as my front axle is 6 on 5.5". I decided since I had to get some custom 6 lug shafts made anyways, I better do it right this time. Called up Moser and ordered some 35-spline 1.5" shafts and a spool. Then called Yukon for a new nodular case that would accept the 3.250" bearings for the larger shafts.

Also ordered some gears, and decided to regear the front at the same time since 4.56's and 37's aren't ideal for a trail rig. 5.38's for the front and 5.43's for the rear are going in now (closest ratios they had for the Ford 9" and D44, 0.9% variance will be no problem).

Here are the pictures for now (these were all taken with my Storm as my camera was broken at the time :finga:)

I'm curious why nobody uses the trick of putting 8.8 disk brakes on the 9". No brain damage of fabbing/welding brackets plus you retain the parking brake.

Because this is a Big Bearing 9" axle, the 8.8 trick only works on the Small Bearing 9".

edit: PLUS I had to use a 6 lug rotor since I'm not running the 5 lug pattern.

I would think so, my wheels are 15x8s so if you've got a wider wheel that could make a difference too. :smt102 I'll be heading back outside in a little bit, I'll check again to see what mine measure out to.

Rock Pile on Pritchett....this was the one obstacle that I wanted to conquer this year, it's also the one that made me build up the 9" after blowing up the rear 44 on it. I MADE IT! Video to come :)

Then the blazer's alternator died, I had to tow him out, and I only had 3 wheel drive (broke an outer chrome-moly). Went to bump that ledge to get up and since there was no power to the passenger front, it completely slid over and if it weren't for that large ass rock under my driver rear, I would've flopped it.

Tom Woods will cut you a good deal I'm sure. I used to have major driveshaft carnage on the 6-states built shafts I ran, then switched to the TW gold seal, non CV, 1310 stuff on my old buggy and never had a problem again. I aslo paid less for them than I paid for the 6-states shafts. Just be sure to tell him you talked to him at GSW and he'll give you a good deal.

Alright well I was going to wait until I finished this project before I uploaded anything just so people could see the end result before I had to explain everything. As it stands though I won't finish this until next weekend as I'm headed out of town this weekend so here's what I'm currently working on.

I've decided to build some tube fenders that tie the front bumper to the rock-sliders and then take a tube through the side fenders above/between the radiator and alternator area. The tube will tie into the bottom tube on both side fenders.

Then I'll take some sheet-metal (probably 14-16 gauge) and weld it halfway up the tube all around to try and keep the fenders looking as "stock" as possible.

I will be painting the entire Jeep white, so these will be painted to match. Anyways enough with the talk...here are the pictures.

Looks good bro, let me know if you have any questions on paint. You will definately wanna spray some self etching primer on that bare metal so you can be sure the paint will stick. If you need any supplies call me, i can get you a good deal on any of that kind of stuff.

And I dunno, but where the tube ties in with the slider....can you gusset that corner or something? I'm sure it is plenty strong, but it kind of seems like it would be a weak spot. Just my .02

If you notice, there is a bend in the top part of the fender. I did this because the stock fenders have a slight bend to them, so it was either put a slight bend there (which may even help protect the engine more in the event of a roll) or have the end by the windshield 2" higher lol.

Here is what I am trying to avoid and why I am building these. Most of you have probably seen these pictures, but to those who haven't, this is a buddy of mine that flopped over Labor Day Weekend with me.

It just got me thinking that I need to do something to prevent all that damage, as I was on that same obstacle moments before and the same could've happened to me.

Smart thinking about the fender bends, I like it!

Is the new paint job due to a new advertising thing (different color scheme), or did you just now find out that white ZJ's are the shit? :D

Those look pretty good. Not too different from the ones we made for the Pathfinder.

That thing is tall!

I was thinking about putting some support tubes in the middle of the fenders...but I really want to keep these fenders looking as stock as possible. Like from 50ft I want them to look normal if possible.

You could cut a tube in half and support just on the back side. That way, it will look seamless across the sheet metal. Better than nothing IMO.

Not a bad idea....I will look at doing that when I start working on it again. Thanks!

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but is the wheel well opening the same size as stock or did you make them higher so that you won't have any wheel rub? Looks like from the pictures that you might have been able to make the opening taller if you needed to.

Overall I like the idea and design and have thought of doing the same thing once I develop more fab skills.

It's about 2" higher than it was with those old fenders. I never had any rubbing issues before though so I didn't care to have it any higher. I have my front bump-stopped pretty well.

Maybe I missed it but are you planning on cutting out the skins of the old fenders and filling the sections in the new tube fenders. I was planning on doing this when I get mine done. Saw a guy on pirate do it on an XJ a while back and I loved the way it looked.

I'll be skinning it, but not with the old fenders...I want a bit more strength and durability. I'm going to use 14 or 16 gauge metal to skin it.

You got a booth by chance? I'd be down....

Paint booths are overrated. Just clean your garage well and find a way to evacuate the fumes ie: a box fan or two. i have probably painted 6 cars this week in a similar setup cuz we had a lot of cars and only one booth in our shop

I've painted 2 cars in my garage....parents don't really like it.

I have a 10'x20' carport I plan on painting it in though.

Haha ya my dad let me paint his bike in their garage and that was the last time anything will ever be painted at their place. But a carport thats pretty cool. Is it an enclosed one or something? most that i have seen are practically just a roof with supports
