Oh and im doin a little more cuttage.... ahem a LOT more cutting. ive already hammered the pinch seem and cut a lot more fender.... and rear doors. i just got to pretty em up a lil bit.. maybe ill snap a few pics if my 9 month allows me to get a break.

ya i took a bunch of pics........ cus it IS my build up page. i kinda like to see how god awful ugly my first cut was then how i purdy them up and make it look clean again.
everyones a critic tho

but ya thanks for the positive feedback that was sprinkled in with the haters posts.

i really like the look of the front.. i think it looks mean and hungry. ive made the approach angle SO much better with out spending shit! i also like the look without the bottom running lights/ blinker. i fabered my blinker light into my corner lens. So ya alls thats left to cut in the front is the radiator supports.. but since i dont own a welder thatll be a few.

nice hack job, I dig the white heaps.

question on the cladding removal, why rhino line it? I want to pull mine off, clean it up and paint it white or include the sides into cammo. maybe some plate reinforcement to keep them doors straight, but you figure the lining will help?

DanKNesS
01-22-2008, 09:27 PM
the ryno liner... i figure would just make it so i didnt have to repaint as much. i think it would protect against chips in the paint from flying debri from wheeling? or maybe its just for looks. i think itll be a lil more rugged looking and will stand up to lil rocks and branches etc better

lil update wif some wheelin pics...
the 33's ran like a dream! i never saw em rub... but of course every obsticle i did i had to drive instead of take pictures. i really sucked ass when it came to the pic snapping. there was a ginormous turn out with the count being well over 50 rigs. since there was so much we kinda scattered into smaller groups. i never got a pic of the WHOLE clan that woulda been nice.. ALSO my POS camera is a POS so i missed a bunch of great pics that i woulda had.. like my budyy in his cherokee flopped on its side.

over all it was a great trip and im SO glad nothing broke!!!

Not sure which one looks worse...your welds or the bumper you made.

Anyway, what's the goal of the bumper? To house a winch or...just for looks. :)

And if you still drive your jeep on the road which I think you do then that bumper will kill what air flow you used to have since it completely covers the front grill.

in some countrys when the the secound toe is as long or longer its considered a sign of wisdom... i say the same about my receding hairline at 22.

oh and ya i wear gloves and safety glasses when i grind and pose for pics... the bumper was hot as ish still and my glasses are just crazy cool so i sport them everywhere.

yes the bumper intends to house a whench

its ugly.. but all welds penetrated good and im happy with the design... exactly what i had on paper. i didnt want to sacrifrice my approach angle so thats why its so high. fa q if you dont like it. if i do over heat on the trails (which i doubt since i rarely use HI and if so just for a few) i will get a higher flow tstat housing folled by a better radiator- still running stock with 114k.

oh and no its no longer a DD. i have an 85 or 84 yoter.

Its funny how much shit you talk. Which means the fabrication side of it is even worse that it looks probably. I was mearly giving constructive critisism. But of course you think of it as everyone saying they're better than you. And contrary to what you say...the bumper covers 80% of your rad. On the trail it might not be a huge deal but on the street is where it would come into play. Also, what does hi/low...assuming you mean 4hi and 4lo have anything to do with your running temp. If anything you would run cooler in 4lo than 4hi since the motor doesn't have to work that hard. But I guess at the mall you don't need 4lo. :)

But in the end...not "shit" looking weld you can see through penetrated good. And other than having to deal with your shit talking, I bet there would be plenty of people willing to wheel with you. It'd be nice to see if your wheeling abilities could stand up to what you're mouth is talking.

If an ARB goes through the radiator -- you got bigger things to worry about because it'd be a result of a high speed collision or driving off of a high cliff, not from bashing off of a rock.

DanKNesS
05-02-2008, 01:55 AM
Preppi- if youd read my rant youd know iwas clearly talking about my efan speed. low and high. rarely do i ever need high speed. as for my dirver ability, well i kept up with a yota on 37s or 38's detroits front and rear- be it he paid 7 grand for itas is. ive wheeled non stop from stock to current allmost every day. ive reached and pushed the boundries of each new addition. its now a recreation only vehicle. i appreciate your constructive criticism. dont get so hurt when i bite back.

Sir Fuego, im actually touched you follow aloung enough to know i golf. of course i dont talk this way on the course.. i dont have a bounch of old men getting E-tough with me. i see your piont tho. Ha maybe MC will get paid off when i hit the big leagues to not release some of my childish babble.

ya ya im sure ARB is plenty tough, im just super stoked i made mine my self and i know its uper stout. i thought some of you would bash me for using 1/4 inch for my frame mounts and winch plate.

as for high speed collision or cliff im pretty sure my weak (for now) frame/unibody would give away much sooner then my ugly bumper.

can anyone guess what color my bumper will be?

sorry i forgot to address that cus it was so dumb

i actually already cut my radiator supports and have already designed the radiator mount similar to kevins.

HAD YOU OR ANYONE ASKED i still plan to add a prerunner type skid to the bumper kinda at the angle of the mounts- more the reason to cut the bumper flush at the mounts. and as soon as i get my dring tabs cut they will be welded thru the front AND back side of the 2 by for and 4 inches odf it will be welded to my mounts.... is that how ARB does it for a grand?? or is it just welded to the outside? HA even the ones poison spider sells are barely long enough to weld on both side mush less 4 inches on the fram mount.

btw heres mine
this was taken last weekend.... please note the side rad. support still intact. not to mention the old radiator mount from the bottom on the ground already

05-02-2008, 08:54 AM
where you going to put a winch on that bumper? If so I would reconsider and hunt down some box. The idea looks good but if you are really going to do some winching, I would question its strength. I say this because you will loose the amount of surface area that you have lost in the uni to stop wiggle and extra stress on one side. But if your not going to have a winch it should be a really good start.

DanKNesS
05-02-2008, 11:21 AM
I dont mean to be rude but come on now this is at least the secound time ill answer that ? not to mention i said it was gonna be a winch mount from the beggining.
bout the mounts... im not sure i know what you mean.... ARB doesnt use 2x4 in the frame from what i gather... also ive seen PLENTY of bumpers designed similar but NONE had the extra bolt on the bottom of the frame rail like i added. Max did a similar mount with out any problems.. hes got a winch too.

fact of the matter is... ill be pulling people out with my rear bumper b4 my front. and once i get a winch ill try to keep it to as need basis. shit ive wheeled thus far without one, just got to be smart with your lines. i sure do appreciate all the concern tho.

ARB isnt really designed for our type of wheeling in the first place. those guy in australia never really have heavy winching of a lifted vehicle in mind. they probably have the poorest design of any bumper i have ever seen. ive heard of them bending under heavy pulls. dont compare an ARB to a homebuilt which can be much better, if you take your time. there is no excuse for box.

im just saying my bumper is most def stronger then what a lot of people on here paid 1000 bucks for.

im going to be adding a truss or 2 on the inside of the frame rail so im really not at all worried about my design. if you have an idea for how to beef up the mounts i already have then fire away. basically this is all that i got at my diposal so i plan on making it work.

i know i should probably aim higher, but my goal was to build a strong bumper that could take a blow that would be stronger then an ARB and i really didnt want to sacrifice any of my approach angle. i think ive done this even better then i planned.

SirFuego

also ive seen PLENTY of bumpers designed similar but NONE had the extra bolt on the bottom of the frame rail like i added. Max did a similar mount with out any problems.. hes got a winch too.
Well, since we are comparing bolt count...

Mine is going to have three bolts on the bottom of the frame rail, two bolts on top and four on the side. Yeah that's right, 9 grade 8 bolts on each side. 18 grade 8 bolts holding it in! Woo!

sweet! sounds like a good design. if materials allowed id go that route. maybe when i make the next one ill consider that. you got some pics? or is this just what you have in dream land? where are you gonna fit the 3 bolts on the bottom of the frame rail? are you gonna take the time to get the strip of metal with the nuts attached out and use those holes?

dangerousdave
05-02-2008, 12:27 PM
The point is when you try to bolt through the side with nothing on one side you cannot get the bolt tight enough to be of any use. The uni is thin ass metal. You will crush the frame rail. Box steel fixes this problem and gives you a better distribution through the frame. The number of bolts is irrelevant if you cant get them tight enough to keep the thing in the frame rail.

DanKNesS
05-02-2008, 12:34 PM
i do kinda see what your saying....

the side bolts will be used in conjunction with my radiator support tho.. ill use the bottom 2 holes at least and kinda sanwhich the frame between the 2. maybe ill make it long enough to get all four bolts

since it would be hell to drill out the engine side of the frame rail to bolt it there i think ill be fine wth adding some triagulated gussets or what ever you want to call them

No pics, but it was just finished a few days ago. I had a local shop to it since I suck with a welder. The nutserts at the bottom were cut out and a grinded down 5x2 was used to sleeve the rails -- which is why the bolts can go all around it. The entire bumper is acts as a lower rad support, front cross member, front bumper, and winch mount. I'll be posting up pics in a few weeks after my lift goes in.

I'm not claiming that I did any of it myself. I worked with them closely on the overall design to make it as functional, high clearance, and beefy as possible, but the shop did all of the metal cutting and fab work since my tools were far from sufficient to do it. My welder sucks and I have limited skills. I have no time to really teach myself right now, so I have no shame in getting a local shop to do it. Once I finish up grad school, I'll hopefully have more time to learn metal fab.

you are on short arms and have a rear track bar...I can be 99.9% positive that your rear coils will never pop out on your jeep. You would have a better chance pulling someone out with your bumper and it not ripping off, than your coils popping off...so why you did the extensions, I do notknow.

piku303
05-02-2008, 04:25 PM
when i say no excuse for box i mean that you can not possibly create a mounting system that is stronger and disperses load better than box steel. the box steel becomes like a frame rail within the existing frame rail. when you side pull it puts the load on both sides of the frame rails.

uh... ya i have a rear track bar.. i didnt think much coiled axles could get away with out having one. but hey what do i know?

so ya i do have a rear tb but no rear sway bar which did add flex when i removed it.

i added the extensions because with the true two's in place the spring had nothing to keep it in place. they would pop out no where near full flex. thanks for the reply tho

i think bender would be the best so i could make a stinger and some tube fenders and what not. i just dont know up from down when it comes to benders. a yota head told me he did his whole exo cage with a hydrolic bender from harbour freight.... im a lil sketch on this but it did look good.

I haven't ever given you any negative "rep"...yet. If you are looking for advice on avoiding it, try punctuation, capitolization, and a third grade level of basic sentence structure. Perhaps your tone is not correctly interpreted because no one knows what the fuck you are trying to say. Confused? I'll translate for you...
