Just wondering if anyone uses these, I myself am a fine of betting a specific bit for the specific size but I am seeing more and more of these out there.

i got some from harbor freight, they are wonderful, howerever...there are things that require a specific sized bit...also, a good step bit drills like hell, its so fast its amazing.

We use them at work often and they are a time saver. The only limitation is the thickness of the material you are drilling because of the spacing of the steps.
They work great for light material like body panels. They won't grab and bend the hell out of stuff like a large twist drill bit will.

I use them a ton, love them.
I have used them on plastic and thin sheetmetal. Can you use them on say, 1/4" plate?
Decent ones are in the $30 range, so not exactly cheap. Plus you can't re-sharpen as far as I know.

Love my unibits. .25", yes. Once you drill to the step you need, just flip over the steel and drill the other side to the same size step. I normally drill a 1/8" or so pilot hole to get me started. As far as sharpening, Im still experimenting with that. Ive had some luck but nothing concrete yet. I use cutting oil when using them and of course a low turning speed.

I used a step drill bit from harbor freight to make the holes in my clayton crossmember so i could tap them for the skip plate. They got through that, but it was hard work. They are definitely suited for lighter shit.
