WHAT:
Grand Slam - Mid West
WHERE:
Badlands Off-road Park, Attica Indiana
WHO:
Any one who wants to attend! You are encouraged to bring a Grand Cherokee, however other models are accepted as long as you are ready to have fun! In the future when this event gets more attention, there might need to be some restrictions. However that is a long way off.
WHEN: Grand Slam Mid-West will be held:

--->May 2008 9, 10, and 11.<---

Info for Badlands:
http://www.badlandsoffroad.com/

Places to stay:

The Attica Inn
http://www.theatticainn.com/
-it is a nice place, be sure to mention the Badlands for the discount. The Inn is within 2 miles of the park. Parking lot wrenching friendly as well. They do ask you not to use the bath towels to clean your vehicles. (for real!)

The Badlands Campground
http://www.atticacamping.com/
-nice campground located on the property of the park near the entrance. This is where we had the cookout, which will happen again!

Those are the only two that I have personally been to. The campground is only $7 a person per night, which is pretty cheap, yet still a nice campground.

More places to stay can be found here:

I'll be there, it's kind of a tradition now, eh :-D

I'll be trying to find some give aways again this year, I know Iron Rock has already agreed to donate a few things. Last year we were lucky enough to have something for every driver, hopefully we can do something similar.

I should also have the "machine gun" front end fixed by then, so I won't scare so many people when I have to lock up :-D

Never been there, just wondering what the terrain was like. I'll probably still be where I am at right now: 4.5", 31's, open 30/35, winch, DD but not afraid of body damage. Sounds like a good time, would love to make it down there.

FYI...
Also look into Summers Campground. It is about 5 miles out in the country, but it has been a wheelers campground for years. Lately, though, the owner/caretaker has been more of a PIA than a help.
The Attica Inn is basically a pole building that was turned into a hotel. Picture a prefab Super 8. It is in town, and the staff are friendly. Plenty of rig/trailer parking, and a mile to the park.
The Attica Hotel is great, but very old. Some of the rooms share bathrooms, but it is a great place, and they remodeled the bar a couple of years ago. Right in the middle of town, and close to the bars/restaurants/debauchery/Dresser bridge.
Campground at the park run by a great couple, and the rules are 'lightly' enforced. Have never had a problem with drinking/fires there, and you get to skip the LONG line waiting to get into the park in the morning, adding 30-60 minutes to your day.
I will fill in on the trails later, after I can confirm any changes that are to be made this year, but there is something for everyone.
Hasta.

I'd rather stay at the campground that's attached to the wheeling land, sooo much easier.

x2. Both times I have been to the Badlands we stayed there. It does suck in some respects, but I think it will be much much better now that they have the bathhouses done. My only complaint is that there is no trees or any type of shade anywhere in the campground.

For those with more money/taste, look into the Apple Inn.
EXCELLENT B&B with interesting rooms, hot tub, prepared breakfast, etc, and just blocks from the park.

needs 3 new poles to hold the fence up.. not too bad.. the ford (imagine this) took most of the damage.. you know what murphey says: a $2000 tv will protect a 10 cent fuse.. and thankfully she buys parts for the jeep, pays some of the bills and loves wheelin. she had a blast at rausch creek..

you know there a keeper when they buy parts for the jeep.. :best:

A pair of adjustable lower control arms for WJ, ZJ, XJ, and TJ ($129.99 Value)

I'm still going to make it but it looks like my front ds upper is cracking and the lowers (skyjackers) are almost rusted through... I'm using it as an excuse to build a LA setup for the front:D Thank god I'm done with finals on friday - it's gonna be a long week

Maybe you will win the IRO adjustable lowers, that should get you by until you can build your LAs :smt023

Haha that would be sweet, but I was poking around at it the other day and put a screwdriver through one of the lower CAs... Damn I hate rust. It shouldn't be too bad - I've been collecting stuff to do it for a while now and just need some tubing for the arms.

Sorry I have been so busy lately! Classes just keep on demanding time. I've updated the first post with the drivers.

No, I am not on that list as of now... things are up in the air on a few levels! Jeep-Family event-Summer research... yikes...

So it looks like we have 11 listed, I know there are two more, so that's 13. Last year we had 13 total, and we need to grow, so we need a couple more. Ask around, threaten someone, I don't care, just get some more Grands for this run :D

No time for longarms this week. I'm going to throw together some short lowers today to get it there :D. Also have to redo my sliders (driver side got destroyed in a wreck and I didn't like them much anyway) and put the front driveshaft back in. Planning on being there tomorrow around 4:30.

Should have plenty of mud - it's been raining pretty much all week here, but it's supposed to be mostly dry this weekend. I-70 is done but there's some construction on the west side of 465 in case anybody's gonna be on there. Gas is $3.85 in central IN for regular and diesel's at $4.19 as of today.

That about covers it. Off to the steel yard :D

I will be there but I am taking the southern route!! wife changed my plans. I have to go to TN pick up my son then head up 41 to Attica. then Sunday reverse that. All when gas is too damm much...

Ken I wont be at your place Friday morning!! I plan on leaving TN before 10 am so I should still be there around 3 or 4.

The other guy , Jeff, will leave St Louis later friday if he still goes, I think he will, he was getting sick.but he has a lot of work in his Grand to skip it.

Getting ready to go to bed and was getting a drink of water from the fridge, and I hear water running from the laundry room. POS water heater busted and water is everywhere. The damn thing is only 4 years old, I woke the wife up and told her she was getting a cold shower in the morning and that she needed to call someone from church or a friend and ask them for help if she didn't want to take a cold shower all weekend...yea that's right, I got my priorities in order :smt045

Great run guy's, appreciate all that made it. It was a gret time of some pretty hard wheeling without too much carnage. I actually made it 5 miles from home before I sheared off the rear caliper bolts and and dropped it on the side of the road. It's interesting trying to limp home using low gear and an emergency break :D

I'll see if I can't get to some of the pic's up soon. Oh and I found the coveted video of the trip, I won't say what it is, but it made a loud bang and people when ohhhhh, and then someone was done for the day :D

I was only able to make it down for Saturday and only ran the creek trail with the group but we definitely had a blast! Only damage is a smashed trans crossmember and chipped/ slightly cracked the housing on the 249 (oh well) from a nasty drop off (for 2" of lift and 31s) and a few mandatory scrapes :D. Lost a weight on the front driveshaft, too. Can't wait for next year - hopefully nothing pops up that I have to go home early for next time

as for my carnage list:

- nice dent above the rear window below the roof rack (hey it was either lay on the tree or roll it
- tore that front KMA to pieces and bent the inner support
- Lots of tree and rock rash
- Smashed center cap
- seperated rear caliper on the way home.

Well, the ARB is toast.
3 teeth missing from each of the spider gears.
The drivers side gear is fused to the carrier, which allowed me to make it home with the passenger side gear useless.
The locker is now a paperweight, and will likely be replaced with a Detroit by next weekend.
Tearing it down at the park would not have saved it, as the side gear seemed to fuse as I came down, and never released. I am assuming some spider gear metal got under it.
Otherwise, and even so, it was a great weekend with some great new friends.
I won't go name by name, but some people took care of me all day on Saturday, and I appreciate it greatly.;)

Damn that sounds horrible. The way home revealed a horrible grinding sound for me. I'm not sure what it is yet as I really haven't had time to look into it yet. It sounds like it is coming from the front end, but I have no idea. All I know is that I can feel it as soon as the engine cranks over and it is a decent grinding vibration.

All I know is that I can feel it as soon as the engine cranks over and it is a decent grinding vibration.

It vibrates/grinds in park or neutral?
Does it change pitch with change in RPM?
So the noise is engine based, and not driveline based?
You are sure about that?
Thats a good thing, because it's easier to diagnose in most cases.
Thats a bad thing because...well...its the engine...
Things that can grind up there are water pump, fan clutch, alternator (water), harmonic balancer, etc.
Need more info to diagnose.
...
OBTW...my ARB was a first gen unit, and gave 8 years of service.
I put it back in for the 30 mile trip to my friend's shop, so God willing, it will give me just a little more love.
For my next trick, I have decided that I tire of switches, and am moving to a Detroit for the rear, and it should be in by this weekend and broken in by Memorial Day.
I will leave the switch for the rear ARB in, but just never turn it off.
Wyfe is less than pleased.

It grinds in all gears. It isn't so much a grinding noise as it just sounds like there is excessive friction between 2 things, I'm not sure what. 2 things that came to mind were A) Motor mounts and B) Clearance between exhaust and body. I'm actually going out there right now to check it out and see what the deal is. I'll report back one way or another.

Well, I figured out the problem. It turns out that I bashed my t-case skid/x-member so hard that it was in contact with my transfer case. The vibrations from the motor and transmission/drivetrain were being transmitted back through the cross member and into the body. I'm not sure if it was a result of that bolt coming out of my crossmember, but looking at the design, it seems pretty likely that it will happen again. I need to find a way to stiffen the rear support arm....look below.

Originally there was no gap between these two surfaces.

http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/ajmorell/Jeep/P5120008.jpg

The bracket attached to the unibody was mangled. I pounded it out best I could.

http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/ajmorell/Jeep/P5120011.jpg

Final Result:

http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/ajmorell/Jeep/P5120010.jpg

I'm going to contact Kevin and see if anyone else had this problem. I think the main problem is that rear bracket that attaches to the unibody rail is just too thin. I'm thinking of modifying it so that it is 1/4" u-channel instead of that thin plate and having 2 bolts running through the frame rail in addition to the 2 tapped in from the bottom.

The skid row skid is built differently than Kevin's, but I had the same issue with mine after high centering on a rock. Those self-tapping bolts just don't seem to hold up too well.

Looks like a great time. I'm hoping to make this next year. Might be going to the Badlands later this year, too.

Dove into the caliper job today, thought it would be relatively simple...not.

Pulled off the wheel and found this:

http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m288/10achik/GSMW%2008/100_1548.jpg

Notice the sheared bolt still in the back:

http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m288/10achik/GSMW%2008/100_1563.jpg

Only way to get to it, was to remove the axle shaft an the dust cover.

http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m288/10achik/GSMW%2008/100_1562.jpg

Drilled a hole and used some ezouts and removed it:

http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m288/10achik/GSMW%2008/100_1564.jpg

Went to the store and found some new bolts and went to put everything back together and found out the caliper bracket was actually bent. Took the bracket off and put it in a vice and beat the crap out of it. Used a little heat, a wedge and the vice to finally get it bent back right. Cast aluminum parts are not fun to bend. Anyway got it all back together, then the ABS light wouldn't go out, messed witht he wires and got that fixed.

Here's a few pic's of the other damage I found today:
