Oval LEDs, that's the plan when I do the same to mine.

Oval leds look good.

What about on the rear axle truss?

Seriously though. Only other non-hatch area I see is on the bumper. Not sure that you would want them there though since they might get smashed up. Plus you would need to relocate the stickers.

My ZJ looks like a fugly beat up robot, though. I wouldn't be taking advice from me on what looks good.

Are the LEDs bright enough ? or just a legal issue.

They make small fog lights (1"x2") that would fit vertically on the ends of the "bumper" you have in back. They would be plenty bright enough.

He can get them from the store and I can bring them down or ship them to you, whatever works with timing.

Going to be at my sisters on Sun. it looks like but not sure if there is time in the schedule to head down to your place or not.

No need to spring for them. If you don't like them, they 100% returnable!
They are more like 1.25" x 3.5".

"they" are Blazer, my apologies for not stating that earlier.

not cheap, but really bright & they would kick ass in the back of your hatch.

these are the red ones in this pic, but maybe someone can chop them into your hatch to give you an idea what they would look like.

I did these two really-quick photochops (I know the lights are a little crooked, but you should get the idea) using the blue-tinted lights. Though I'm not exactly sure I put them in the right place that napajeep was mentioning and I think the relative size of the lights are way off, too. What is the height and width of your rear bumper?

The lights that NapaJeep posted up would work good. The fog light version (white lense) that he showed is what I used on my roof rack and they seem good for not much $$. The best part is they are a metal case with a replaceable bulb so you can change out the 55W bulbs they come with for a 100w bulb for even more light.

Have you thought about hanging them off of the bottom of your upper shock hoop? From the picture it looks like it hangs down low enough for them to shine out under the bumper.

I don't like the idea of putting them on the bumper, it seems like they would get really fucked up really quickly. And putting them anywhere on the body just gets them really stupidly high. Are you just concerned with having lights on there so that people behind you know that you're about to reverse over them, or are you thinking you might want to illuminate some of what's behind you? If you just want white lights to hit on when you click into reverse, I'd go with LED's somewhere on the tailgate. If you want to see what's behind you at night, I'd go with some fog lights or something similar on the axle if you can find a spot.

I actually scored some really thin 1"x4" H3 lights they look really good above the bumper but below the hatch. Just enough room in there for them.

Jerod- try the LED's- you'll love the brightness and low amp draw.

Also on topic- drove my zjuggy 25 miles to the trail today and back without any law enforcement intervention... :D

Looks good. Will they get hit when loading/unloading junk from the hatch area or are they tucked under a little?

They are under the unibody some, more like right under the weather stripping.
