might be worth a try.... hell it is even cheaper than the harbor freight one (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=40764)

Warn is a good name, but I still think they're overpriced. If the first one doesn't work, you could buy two more for the price of the warn. Also I have a feeling that this is an introductory price, since it's new product.

I wonder if I have $300 left on my credit card...

In my opinion... Smitybilt makes junk step bars and bumpers, I would imagine that there winch would be no different. Although, for 300 bucks it might be worth it

There was a huge thread about this winch on Pirate4x4. It is the same winch as I think one of Milemarker winches. It's been out for a while now and none of the people on the pirate thread that I can remember had any problems with the winch. I was impressed by how well the winch was working out of the people on pirate that I plan top buy one. It may not be a warn but I think that it will be a good winch. Maybe it will drive warns prices down some.

Good thinking. You will be able to run over to the store and pick up another when your rig is laying precariously on its side and the first one no worky.

I'd bet that winch in manufactured in the very same factory in China and the Harbor Freight one. http://www.ldnb.com/en/index.htm

FYI, the HF one is on sale all the time for $250 in the stores (9000# one for $300 too). The HF winches seem to do OK for what they cost, they are just slow. With a 265:1 ratio, the Smittybuilt is going to be slow too.

What, you never heard of someone carrying an extra winch with their spare parts?:D

I ended up buying the Warn M8000. Those shitty ones are backordered anyways

I figured that the HF ones were crap too, that's why i bought the 10,000lb HF winch from some guy for $300. Still in the box!

I ordered the Shittybuilt through 4wheelparts. It is backordered. $30 gets you a no questions asked lifetime warranty. Figured why not, if it breaks on the trail, I'll do what I did before I had a winch, figure something out. Then when I get home, I can get a new one for free.

I guess we'll see how it works.

I went with the Summit winch for $350. 2.6 more horsepower for $50 more dollars, why not. Built in Australia by T-max. It has worked flawlessly.

The warranty is through 4wheelparts. Theyve treated me decent in the past with warranties. It would be nice if I never needed the warranty, but as with all electronics, better safe than sorry. Time will tell. If it becomes unreliable, Im sure one the many posers around here will buy it for what I have in it.

Well at least its made in an ISO9001 factory in China.

The best advice when using a low cost/low power winch is do not overload it and remember the rating is on the first layer of the drum. If you pull the full capacity with only a few feet of cable pulled out you will likely damage the winch or overheat the motor. Othwerwise you will be ok.

I bought the Warn/Magnum/Tabor 9000 and a few years ago and with a half dozen or more pulls on it no problems at all. This winch is a more like 500-600 but can pull over 7000 lbs on the top layer of the cable. It has never even felt like it was straining or getting hot. I even pulled myself up Devils Gate on Hells Revenge for 75-100ft with no problem.

Be careful and do not over load it and you should be goo.

Not built in Australia. Just engineered there. Built in China just like every other brand winch other than the non tabor / magnum warn winches.

With that being said I have two T-max's :smt091 One front and one rear and getting ready to buy a Bull dog atv winch for the front suck down because I can't think of a rope routing for the front winch to use as a suck down.
