...and broke down and got a new DD. The blue goose ran a good show and i put about 23k miles on it in a little over a year. But now onto bigger and better things. Its an 04 Audi A4, 5 speed, 1.8L turbo, bose sound, sunroof, lots of cool little gadgets. I was going to wait awhile to get a newer DD but this came up for a STEAL so I couldn't say no. Its going to stay relatively stock, I may get some S4 19" wheels and maybe a little mild spoiler but nothing crazy. Just thought I would share a few pics of her....

I just picked up some RS4 wheels myself. They're 17" for the '01. The 19" will look sweet on your '04!

Thanks Elliot - it is in remarkably good condition considering it is a 7-year-old car. http://www.mallcrawlin.com/forum/images/icons/icon12.gif

So far it has been good to me. As far as maintenance, Audi takes real good care of you while it's under warranty (I had a light out on the dash and a broken knob on the stereo when I first bought it - Audi replaced the dash display and the whole stereo for free). The most expensive thing so far has been the timing belt, which has to be replaced at 60k miles.

When I first got it, a friend of mine needed a jump. I popped the hood to hook up the jumper cables - and couldn't find the battery!! I actually had to get out the owner's manual (which my friend really got a kick out of) to see which panel had to be pulled to reveal it (it's tucked back under the panel by the windshield wipers). Later when I went to change my oil, I had to remove a panel from underneath (which took some special tools) before I could even get to the filter and oil pan. It was a little tricky just to get under it because it sits so low that you have to approach the ramps somewhat at an angle.

How many miles on it?

Make sure the timing belt is done at 75k miles. Do not fuck around and put this off, or things will get expensive fast. Also save up some money for when you have a coilpack failure. I say WHEN, not IF, because it WILL happen.

Thanks Dale. I do have a couple of spare coilpacks (Hitachi-E upgrade) because I have heard of those leaving people stranded and they are super easy to swap out.

It's got about 55K on it now, but I think I will do the timing belt soon anyway whenever it starts to warm up.

Also, doesn't this video look faked to anyone else? If you figure the other traffic is flying along at 95mph, (which is about where his speedo is when he catches that suv at ~2min) and the supposed speedo is at like 170, shouldn't those cars be being passed faster? I have never driven over 130mph, but when I did (or didnt) go close to that, cars doing 75 seemed really slow. He also puts his right hand back on the wheel when he gets into traffic, blocking the speedo. I hate to be one of the haters who cry fake at anything cool, but I have watched plenty of Audi vids and this one seems real hokey to me.

They don't sell "remanufactured" wheels. They sell REPRODUCTION wheels of a definite sub-par quality. I have seen some of their products firsthand. They have a poor finish, at best. Put one of their wheels next to the real deal, and you immediately see that they are crap. With a finish that bad, I'd be concerned about just how well the wheel is constructed overall.

IIRC, they sell most of their shit on ebay.

180 is pretty far off from 124...I forget the actual numbers, but horsepower requirements increase exponentially as you get into triple digit speeds. Its not like 0-60 is 4 seconds, then 0-120 is 8 and 0-180 is 12...BTW, I didn't watch the video, so flame me if you want for not knowing what I'm talking about...:D

To the OP, nice lookin car, but as has been said, be prepared for insane maintenance. Not saying it can't reach the speed, but its definitely not as close as you made it sound. Its easy to get to 125, did it in a 140hp Geo Storm, 180 isn't as easy, and there's been some vehicles with reasonable amounts of power that couldn't make it thanks to aerodynamic and/or gearing limits

I am not saying it is impossible, but this one looks fishy. I have done similar speeds in my A4 1.8t, like I said above. A first gen Viper came in at 3,200lbs and a 400hp 450flb, and a top speed of 164. The Viper GTS had 450 horse and 500flb and did 178. That is more torque and less weight (3600lbs for an 01 S4). Also for a "highly" modified car it is VERY stock looking, which might have been intentional but to get 500 plus ponies to do 185mph you need to do something to the engine bay. Intake, front mounted intercoolers and so forth that would take away that perfect clean stock engine in the video. Just my thoughts.

Good info for the purists among us - though I have to say I disagree on the finish. I have a winter set that looks to be in better condition than the summers, and they have held up quite well to the gravel they throw all over the roads here in Colorado. The ride quality seems to be the same too. For people on a budget, it remains a great option.

I'm not talking about being a purist.... just saying that the wheels I've seen from them were absolute shit. Maybe you actually got the one set out there that looks good. I've seen quite a few wheels from them and not a single one matched the OE wheels. I was not impressed with the finish on any one I have seen, with or without an OE wheel sitting next to them. I do agree though, great winter/poseur wheel.

I am really curious about one thing..... How in the hell would the ride quality of a replica wheel be different from that of an OE wheel?!?!:screwy: That's like saying that the ride quality of a Barts steel wheel is better than that of an identically sized (identical everything) Cragar steel wheel.

If the wheels are built out of a different quality steel or their tolerances are not the same that could have a major impact on ride quality.

We're not talking about steel here. At least not outside of my dumbed down example....

The rigidity of aluminum is such that there would be NO (read that as zero, zip, zilch, nada) difference in ride quality. Especially considering the fact that the reproduction wheels are (supposedly) manufactured to the exact same design as the originals. (meaning all structural dimensions are the same)

That said, 180 is still a long ways away from 120...;)

also the 1992 issue of road and track set its top speed of the dodge viper at 290km/h
Maybe with a strong tail wind or a weak American mile...:D:D Most of the tests I recall on those had a top speed in the range of 160ish for the street versions. Speaking of Road and Track, their old video game Need for Speed (the original before it turned into a ricer fantasy running from cops and whatnot), based on the results of their tests of the individual vehicles pegged the Viper at 160mph.

Canadian driver, before you accuse me of idiocy, again, understand that I do claim video games to be the most accurate purveyors of automotive knowledge, or else I should be able to throw $500 at a 95 Civic hatch and get it to go 150:) Now you may accuse me of idiocy if it makes you feel good.

i have some of those on the rustang. They look the same as my OE wheels aside from the ford logos and castings on the back. The center caps were crappy, but easily swapped for OE

and yes ride quality can be effected by the wheel, if the wheel is way off balance or bolt holes are centered correctly you will get vibes

The 2.8 has a little more horsepower, but the turbo on the 1.8 is quicker to respond from a dead stop. You have to let the turbo cool a little before you turn it off. Personal preference. Either way you can't go wrong! :D

The turbo is very quick to rev and just fun to drive. The 2.8 is a great motor, very reliable and well behaved but definately not as fun. I dsecond John's and Justin's comments on the APR chip. When we first test drove Justin's car I was amazed at the throttle response. It is definately a blast to drive in the mountains.

sucks that falken pulled out of canada, such a good tire company.

just fyi the maxxis MA-V1 (http://maxxistire.com/products/automotive/product_detail.asp?id=5455) are a great tire. they're an ultra high performance all season tire, its odd but they are great. a buddy of mine tried them on his pro drift car and says they hooked up great in the front but after one lap the rear ones would chunk up. so just dont to much drifting with em, lol. my dad has been running them on his audi going 30,000km right now, much better than his fusions that only lasted 18,000km.

Well a buddy and I decided to tackle the timing belt today. It really wasn't too bad of a project. Started promptly at noon and finished around 3:30. I replaced the timing belt with the kit from ECS Tuning (great kit by the way!) and the rear coolant flange which was an uber PITA. It literally broke in 1/2 when pulled off the block. Either way we got her all buttoned back up and she's running good.

BTW, I'm @ 70K miles right now and my timing belt did have very small superficial cracks in it. I didn't like the looks of that. Either way, she's got a new one that will last another 70k miles. Just thought I would share some pics.

All mechanics wish for the day that they can be locked in a room with an automotive engineer. Save a sh!t load doing these things yourself though, the labor to do that job is nuts and at about $95/hour to install $60 worth of parts is little steep, lol.

This isn't remarkably harder than doing a timing belt on anything else. I mean aside from the torx bolts and allen bolts its pretty straight forward. Everyone knows that manufacturers are making items like this more difficult for the shade tree mechanic so that guarantees them to make MORE money when people are forced to bring it to the dealer for repairs. It makes sense though, Audi is a business whose primary goal is to make money.

yeah, i started working for a Jeep dealer about 6 months ago, love the little things, like a fan control module on a WJ that sits under the right hand side headlight, would be so easy to use a hole saw to make an access hole behind the headlight, but being the dealer, the whole bumper has to come off to change the module- which fails all the time anyways. Volkswagens just have never been kind to me, especially the electrical systems.

How much is the timing belt kit? Did it come with the belt tension tool? I probably should do the timing belt in the 951. The PO said he did it, but so far, everything he said has been a lie. And with the engine being an interference motor, I probably should do it just as a precaution. Of course, the guys selling the kits recommend replacing them every 30k - but that just seems like they're trying to sell parts more than anything. The kit for the 951 comes with a water pump, gaskets, thermostat, timing belt, balance belt, oil cooler gasket kit, front engine seal kit and 4 belt rollers. A kit with a rebuilt pump is $425. A kit with a new pump is $610. Then there's about another $150 - $200 in recommended tools for the job :smt101

A OEM timing belt is only $19 of the cost. The OEM balance belt is $40.

 Because theres no other way of accessing the timing belt cover.

The entire front assembly (condensor, radiator, bumper supports, crossbraces, etc) has to slide forward about 6" in order to access the TB.

Holy crap! The kit for this motor (1.8T) was $220 but a.) these motors are a dime a dozen, in almost all of the jetta's, A4's, etc and b.) there aren't alot of parts. It came with the serp belt, timing belt, hydraulic tensioner roller, belt tensioner, water pump, crank bolts, a gallon of coolant, cam seals, a few other little pieces.

All in all, much more straight forward than a Porsche I am sure. Best of luck with that by the way!

I also got 4 Continental ContiSport tires for $150. I can't complain about that either considering they only have 5k miles on them. I hate buying used tires but I am broke! I am going to run by the shop on wednesday and get them mounted and balanced if I have time/ if the machine is working.

I found a place near me that will powdercoat my rims for $20/ea, including sandblasting. I'm seriously thinking about having my rims done in argent, gunmetal, or anthracite. I could have my center caps done at the same time since they're all metal. However, I don't think the guy has ever done rims before, so I've been a bit hesitant.

Yes, its the '02 sport suspension which is different from my '04 non-sport suspension. Just a mild drop. The swaybar is whats going to set it off, I'm stoked about it. It is reccomended to run 93 Octane in it, so I do. I got this car for ridiculously cheap so I will spend the extra $ to treat it right (including maintenance, 93 octane, quality parts, etc).

No major annoyances with it yet, other than its a little trickier to work on than the jeep. But I love learning new things.

Everyone like to joke the Boxter as a chick's car, but it is actually very well balanced. It's not hard to find a well documented used S for <$30k.

And for those who don't know, documentation is EVERYTHING when you're talking about P-cars, F-cars and L-cars. Lack of documentation can cut the value over 50%. It's kind of like a pre-owned certification on the honor system between owners.

love the black housings! i need to motivate myself to either do the same thing to my evo headlights or just buy the jdm ones. only difference is that the turn signal is at the bottom instead of the top. blacked out headlights look mean on a white car. good job! the car gets better every time i check the thread.

Kinda like a front motor mount. Keeps the engine from rocking back and forth when shifting hard. No idea where the name came from.

Newest mod... also cost me $0!

So I guess this thread has run it's course but I thought I'd update it anyway. Now that winter is officially over and no more snowboarding trips will happen until November [=(] I decided to put my summer wheels/tires back on. I wanted them a couple of shades darker so I decided to go with a gunmetal gray instead of silver. I think the refinishing came out pretty good. Just thought I would add some pics.

Of course the ingredients to a project of this nature include: wire brush, mineral spirits (to clean off old paint), liberal amounts of sweet music, a couple of corona dub-deuces, paint of your choice, and a good source of heat/sunlight.

Are you a part of metrodubs? I have a friend megan that is part of that club. she drives a MKII or MKIII golef that she's doing a VR6 swap in. I've got an 03 GTI with the 1.8T, love that motor. I'm glad to see you found ECS tuning. Those guys are awesome! I have a few of their products all work great.

I've met Megan a couple of times at some of the MetroDubs events. It's really cool that she is doing her own wrenching and knows more about those cars than a lot of guys I know.

zj95, you should be able to find one of those motors in the yard. They are all over the place, just be sure to do a basic rebuild (mainly the timing belt) before you put it back in your car. Nothing is new with my car other than the winter tires and wheels, Nokkian Hakkapalitas (or however its spelled) on stock 15" B5 wheels. They get the job done!

Well in only a short amount of time, I've rolled up on 95K miles. I'm planning on doing a LOAD of maintenance things. I'm going to document the plans here so that I don't forget everything I need to do!

-Seafoam crankcase
-Seafoam gas tank
-Seafoam intake
-Change oil/new filter/crush washer
-Change diff fluid (1.5L of GL5)
-Flush brake fluid (1.5 liters of Motul DOT 5.1)
-Change trans fluid (2.3 liters of GL4)
-New O2 sensors (they haven't failed yet but after 100k mi, they need it) Purchased: ECS tuning
-New fuel filter
-Possibly a new MAF (same reason as O2 sensor, efficiency/dependability is the name of the game)
-New plugs (NGK BKR6EIX gapped 0.030, tq'ed 22 ft/lbs)
-Grease window/sunroof guides
-New air filter (open-air cone filter)
-New cabin filter
-Flush coolant (Audi red G5 stuff)
-Check TRE's, control arms, CV's, etc for wear
-Check all vacuum, coolant, oil, etc lines for cracks

I also need to break down and get a turbo gauge. It's a good diagnostic tool for when/if things start getting funky. I'll probably go with the podi gauge and pod.

Stop your whinning ;) We just rebuilt the top end of our B5 after the timing belt broke. Dumbass previous owner changed the belt at 50k (not the dumb part) but did not change the tensioner and put in a shit belt with no markings whatsoever. It looked like said shit belt stretched and then the crankshaft pully ate about 12 teeth off the belt. 16 bent valves later = no go. It only has 84k now so a decent belt should have had a lot more miles in it, oh well, I know it is good to go now...

On topic: ECS is a pretty good little joint. Got pretty much all of the parts for the rebuild from them.

ELLLLLIOTTTTT
12-22-2009, 01:41 PM
Dang dude, who did the head work for you? I did my timing belt at 70K and will plan on doing it again at 140k.

jsteves
12-23-2009, 10:53 AM
Yeah, Audi reccomends 70-80k service now, although they won't print that. I bought a rebuilt head from Import Line Auto for $650. So I have an extra head with bent valves hanging out. I might buy the parts and rebuilld it myself in my spare time then sell it. I just didn't have the time for the A4 to be down that long. All in all, we are into it for $1100 including the timing set from ECS. Not too bad considering a lot of people just scrap these cars after that happens. I tried to get Audi to cover it under the class action suit (not that it was their fault anyway but worth a shot) they said the repairs would be around $4600.

ZachJ
12-23-2009, 02:45 PM
Thats my fear having the timing belt break. Sucks the previous owner didnt do a full timing belt replacement. Your right about people ditching the cars after something like this happens. Why didnt you try finding a used head?

jsteves
12-23-2009, 04:26 PM
I did. This was cheaper. Best price I found on a used was $850. Most places wanted close to $800 for a rebuilt so I think I did ok. The one I was upset I couldn't use was the brand new Audi original on ebay for $500. Wrong type though.

Well, I guess that's what I get for not opening the hood in 6 months. As part of all of the preventative maintenance I found a few things that needed attention. First and foremost, oil in my coolant.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a349/Puma297/Audi/S5001460.jpg

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a349/Puma297/Audi/S5001459.jpg

Cleaned out the reservoir and flushed the coolant tonight. It took several runs to get it running clear but it looks nice and pink now. As far as I can tell, it is the oil cooler and NOT the head gasket. I was also having an erratic temp gauge so I replaced the 2 temp sending units (one behind the valve cover against the firewall, the other in the lower rad hose). I am replacing the oil cooler tomorrow even though I just changed my oil .

Found a PCV issue. It appears to be leaking where the one time clamps have been removed so many times. I think I will be converting all of these over to hose clamps.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a349/Puma297/Audi/S5001458.jpg

Gunky mess in the PCV valve cleaned up. This was either caused by the oil cooler or taking short trips wherein the motor could not burn off the little bit of moisture. My money is on the former.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a349/Puma297/Audi/S5001479.jpg

Changed my REALLY old spark plugs to some new ones.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a349/Puma297/Audi/S5001461.jpg

Refinished my wheels. An even darker color. The center caps were also disassembled so that the audi rings would stay chrome but the rest is the gunmetal color.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a349/Puma297/Audi/S5001474.jpg

And just giggles, I treated myself to some LED tails and license plate bulbs. I think they look pretty good... but please excuse my sub-par camera quality.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a349/Puma297/Audi/S5001481.jpg

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a349/Puma297/Audi/S5001483.jpg

the money savings is pretty satisfying too....i don't know how people afford car ownership without that ability.

You guys must be part masochist. The parts are defiantly made better(but you sure pay for it!) and in some ways they are engineered better, generally not in the way a mechanic cares about though.

Sorry, but anybody who puts a water pump on a timing belt should get slapped. Just my opinion..... and I always seemed to need to by buying another special tool for it. Seriously, reverse torx??? who thought that up?

What I see most people doing is trying to compare new OE factory parts for the German cars to the Cardone remanufactured parts they're getting for their domestics at Autozone - not quite the same. Many of the factory parts I've bought for my 951 were considerably cheaper than new factory parts I bought for the 5.9. I about shit my pants when I started looking at new 5.9 door panels 5 years ago.

Porsche antifreeze for my car is $25/gallon. Jeep antifreeze for my WK is $35/gallon.

It takes a computer whiz to navigate through all the coding in this program.

What's VAG-COM?

So ... everything is good?

Interested in vag com also. Is it euro only?

Everything is running great... I didn't even have to bleed the coolant system to get my heat to work. Just flushed out the block and radiator with distilled water and filled up with G12.

VAG-COM is the diagnostic tool/software used to program virtually everything on the car. It's like a really tech'd out OBD program. VAG-COM = Volkswagen Audi Group - Communications. The ross-tech cable is about $300 but I just got a $20 USB -> HEX-CAN bus cable and some pirated software. It'll take some tweaking to get the software and car all synched up but I'm hoping I can hack it some how (paging Matt!). Denver is expecting sub-zero temps and a few inches of snow so I'm glad this thing is back together!

Ok. Sounds pretty cool. I tend to take having scan tools at my disposal for granted.

Just as an idea... here is a little screen shot of VAG-COM. When it works, it's invaluable.

VAG is sweet! It allows the user to dial everything! Best tool for Audi VW owners. I use pirated stuff as well. It has some glitches as that seems to be the nature of stolen software but for the most part it works great!

I'm just having trouble getting the cable to recognize my car. Grrr. But once I get it all synch'd up I should make it do what I want. (i.e. getting rid of the annoying seat belt chime, running fogs with parking lights, throttle body adaptation, etc).

You mean when you bought it you paid for the $2300 factory option for two tone interior....right? Right? That's what it looks like to me, anyway. needs spacers and a drop! additional generic tuner forum comment!

Further working on the 2-toned-ness. Got a new armrest lid (at $160 ouch) to replace the old gross one that was broken. ECS actually sent me the wrong one so the fitment on the new one will be a little better.

Holy crap its nice outside! Took awhile today to knock out a few tasks I've been meaning to get to. First off, I replaced the valve cover gasket as well as the cam chain tensioner gaskets. I also cleaned out most of the PCV system. Not too bad of a job. While I had the VC off, I scrubbed it down and gave it a coat of wrinkle paint (in good ricer fashion).

Can't really tell but it was leaking a bit in the back.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a349/Puma297/Audi%20motor/917b3bbf.jpg

I broke this brittle plastic elbow off while cleaning all the PCV stuff but will just source some comparable rubber piece.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a349/Puma297/Audi%20motor/9c8a806e.jpg

This is what it looked like after 115k miles. Not too bad really.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a349/Puma297/Audi%20motor/70fac6df.jpg

And then all cleaned up.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a349/Puma297/Audi%20motor/f477f2d1.jpg

And heres the cam chain tensioner assembly. Theres a special VAG tool to compress the piston but that didn't give enough slack to get the gasket out so I ended up pulling the cam towers on the exhaust and intake cams to get a little extra room to work.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a349/Puma297/Audi%20motor/f5a09674.jpg

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a349/Puma297/Audi%20motor/b3d4b37c.jpg

And all buttoned up.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a349/Puma297/Audi%20motor/c60bde40.jpg

I also put in my new head unit. Stock piece but the CD changer stopped working on the old one and I wanted to add an ipod adapter anyway instead of the stupid tape deck. Still trying to work out the kinks in the ipod adapter.

The exterior is getting a makeover. New front bumper (ultrasport), small lip spoiler, and all of the gray body moldings are getting painted white along with the rock chips and couple of door dings I have. Got the first piece today. If anyone in the Denver area knows of a good body shop/guy please let me know!

I'm very close to having a mint interior. The headliner was stained by the previous owners smoking and there were a few smudges and rips. The A-pillars were also fairly chewed up. Tore it all out and replaced it with one in perfect condition.

This gives you an idea why it was pretty nasty.

Yeah, anyway, I'm probably going to catch a lot of junk for this. I know that wood belongs in the A8 and I "should" have gone more toward carbon fiber and and brushed stainless accents but I'm going a different route. I got this piece from Scotty at Advanced Automotion (highly recommend btw) and it seems to match the S4 wood trim perfectly. I'll snap some more pics after I get it installed... sorry for the iPhone quality.
