either way, i am going to get a auto darkening..but there is the auto dark one that has a fixed shade of 10..and thats 80 bucks..then there is the 130 one and it has the variable shade control of 9-12...I am going to be doing all of my welding outside in the sun...do you think i NEED variable control or will I be just fine with the 10 fixed shade:confused:

I don't know if you need it, and the only auto-darkening I've used is my Hobart, but I've got to say I LOVE IT! It's so much easier welding in odd positions than it was with the nod-down.

I have the XTP, adjusts from 7-13 or so, and I really do like having the adjustible shade.

I didn't buy it :finga:

My dad knew I hated my nod-down helmet, and it appeared on Christmas. I couldn't complain!

Shadow bought the one that I use at my house. He got it at northern tool and equipment for like $50. And yes it's auto tint with adjustments and it works great. I have a really hard time with "nod-down" helmets. I usually nod and loose my starting point or it doesn't come all the way down so I end up looking like I'm having a seizure trying to get the lid down. :) lol

I really like the adjustable because I can use it in the low range settings while grinding and high range when welding. A 10 setting while grinding is way too dark to see your work, but it's nice having a little darkening (say a 4)- easier on the eyes.

Exactly, not to mention if you're using cutting torches, welding somethign that "sparks a lot" or any other number of strange situations, variable just plain comes in handy.

Yeah I think mine is set on 8 or 9. I weld in the dark alot so it helps to see what I'm welding. Sometimes I put the shop light nearby too.

Before the auto-darkening helmet, I'd put two 500 watt halogen lams on what I was welding, but now it's easier with the auto-dark and a flashlight.. LOL

I will not be using the helmet for anything but welding

All i want to add to this maxx is don't skimp on something that will be protecting your eyes. You only get one pair. With that said i went and got a top notch Lincoln Welder helmet for $250 and its shade goes all the way to 18 i think, with time delays and a few other controls. Its a really nice helmet. Don't forget to get a sweet paint job on it :D.

I used my non-auto dark sometimes too. If your welding at an odd angle and the sensor doesn't "see" the light from welding, it won't darken sometimes.
