i found this technique on several trailer websites - i verified the formula here (http://www.engineersedge.com/beam_bending/beam_bending3.htm)

http://www.curtmfg.com/index.cfm?event=pageview&contentpieceid=1347

trailer is level - 3/4 tank of gas in heep - loaded with all my trail gear - minus the trailer tie down straps

weight at scale = W * a / l

l = distance between pipes (i used 48")

scale reads 177# X 4 = 708# tongue weight

after some research, i found the safe recommended tongue weight percentage to be 10% to 15% of the gross trailer weight (trailer loaded)

and yes i zero'd the scale before lowering the trailer tongue down on it :D
