So I'm starting to figure out what axles I'm going to swap in when I do Clayton's in the future. I'm seriously considering a yota rear from what I've read on here, pirate and other forums, which leads me to the following question:

What axles are in the rear of a Nissan Pathfinder? How "good" are they? I drove behind one yesterday and it looks a lot like a yota axle.

there are a couple different pathfinder rear axles. Pre-96 axles are a 31 spline h233b axle, 6 on 5.5, 1310's, 3rd member design. The post 96's are essentially the same but have 33 spline shafts. They come with 4.37 or 4.62's stock. Also there is decent aftermarket support as far as gears and lockers.

If i were doing something along these lines I would just go with yota axles.

I don't think so. Maybe you are thinking of Isuzu Rodeos / Honda Passports. They came with a real D44 and some even had 4.56 gears.

and they are like 60.5" wide, pretty close to stock for both a WJ and a ZJ.

The Isuzu D44s are 6 bolt wheel pattern and 63.5 inches wide. The width is great for WJs but you loose the economy of buying one becasue of either custom axles or having to run crappy 2 piece wheel spacers to adapt the bolt pattern.

I do not think the Yota axles make as much sense either because the 8.8 is closer it width to Jeeps and also have the correct bolt pattern. The 8.8 is considered stronger than the Yota 1/2 ton axles. The Yota 1 ton axles are fairly stong but wrong pattern. Even thought they are strong so are 44s, 9s, 8.8s, 60s etc. Yota axles make sense if you are swapping both front and rear from the same donor truck. Otherwise there are a lot of options for ZJs that make better sense.

Right. I've been re-assessing what I'm thinking of doing and think I will go with a Dana44 or 8.8. I would probably need to run wheel spacers to get the yota the correct width. People have run wheel spacers before, but it just seems to be an added cost, potential failure point, and one more thing that could go wrong.

I'll probably end up doing the "normal" thing and get an 8.8 or 44.

I have the Isuzu 44 in mine and I think it was closer 61.5" wide. Works out good though nd they have some big ass discs factory. MAke sure you get calipers too though cause they are freaking expensive.
