next few things on the list are sleeve the frame, build long arms in the front, acquire an 8.8 and hp30 with 4:10s and get some 33/12.50s. i put the bighorns on in may, i really like them but sadly i've only wheeled them once. going wheeling saturday so hopefully i'll get some pics, i forget to take pictures when i'm wheeling though usually but i get it all on video. anyway there it is

I really like my bighorns. I think they are a sweet tire for wheeling. Mine have done a good job dealing with cuts and stuff as such. They also seem to do real well in the city.

I've had em in the snow and a little bit of mud and i was impressed, its nice that i was able to get them at les schwab too. i haven't used them on the rocks yet but hopefully soon!

here's my other zj currently my dd but i wanted to make it wheelable so threw my old bb on it
http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w57/joshmanzj95/DSC01754.jpg
and build a radiator support for tow points http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w57/joshmanzj95/DSC01755.jpghttp://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w57/joshmanzj95/DSC01756.jpg
gotta finish welding it and punching the holes for shackles, should have used 1/2 inch on the lower angle iron but i will thicken up the tow points with some plate later

thanks mike it has been fun but i haven't been able to see what it will do with the bigger lift. i gotta find more challenging areas to wheel!

went on a short trip over thanksgiving and discovered the importance of ratiator protection. tried to go through this water hole which had two inches of ice over the top just at the right hight to go between the "bumper" and the radiator support. made it an interesting trip thats for sure!

i ended up driving 240 miles round trip to pull and save to get all the parts, i got the radiator, condensor, shroud and an auxillary tranny cooler for 31 bucks! plus i took my brother-in-law's diesel bug which gets 45 mpg so fuel was only like 20 bucks. so it ended up being a cheap break just a lot of driving

joshman95zj
02-04-2009, 10:23 PM
got some parts for my front long arms!!!http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w57/joshmanzj95/002.jpghttp://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w57/joshmanzj95/003.jpg

creeper joints from trail gear, poly bushings from poly performance, and a bunch of bolts.

i dont have a shop or welder so everythings gotta be done at my dads two hours away but hopefully this saturday we will get a lot done! all the metal is down there already so my dad is doing everything that can be done ahead of time like cutting the frame sleaves, lca mounts, cross member plates, ect so hopefully it will be like a puzzle. i can't wait!!

i cant find my camera cord for the full jeep shots. i got a few things do deal with, i push the axle foward about two inches so i need to get my drive line lengthened. i had to move the sway bar forward to clear the springs i just plated the frame in that area and drilled and tapped for the mounts. also under full compression the springs bind on the bump stops so i am trying to figure out how i want to fix that. i gotta build a new skid plate too cuz my old one wasn't strong enough and it doesn't work with the sleeves.

anyway can i put my bumpstops at an angle so they dont bind?
and what size plate for the t-case skid 1/4 or bigger?
thanks

What did you use for links and bushings? I take it that is all custom work, not claytons?

If so, where did you order your parts from and what was the cost?

joshman95zj
03-19-2009, 08:29 PM
my dad and i built it, the bushings were from poly performance 2 5/8 x 2 5/8, the joints are creeper joints from trail gear, the arms are 2'' 1/4 wall, the mounts were made with various sizes of 1/4 wall tubing that we cut down and rewelded so all the corners have a radius. and the sleeves are made from 4x6 1/4 wall tubing that we cut in half. my dad gets good deals on metal so i don't really know what that cost but i think i have about 200 in the joints and 50 in the bushings, your on your own on the metal though

Very nice! Some of the best time I have spent is in the garage wrenching with my old man!

thanks dave i needed that i didn't realize how much i didn't know about tread lightly, i thought it was just a matter of not making new trails and picking up trash but i took the course now and i got a lot from it.

so i don't have any pictures but i'm sure you guys can still give me input. i pushed the axle forward about two inches and now the trackbar rubs on the uca mount. i know some people have made their own tb conversions, but is it ok to move the mount location forward like an inch. i would simply just offset the johny joint bracket on the stock tb bracket

still gotta deal with my trackbar issues, i'm just gonna shorten my control arms and then get the IRO kit. also need a new radiator again and poly shock bushings. flexes good though! the pics don't really show it to well but i can pull the front coils with the shocks connected, so i would say it flexes well

joshman95zj

Little update....
fixed my trackbar rubbing issue by shortening my control arms an inch, and also built a new trackbar,
some pics...

http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w57/joshmanzj95/trackbar2.jpg
http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w57/joshmanzj95/trackbar3.jpg
I wanted to get a little more drop in the trackbar, but it doesn't hit anything when i flex it so i guess its fine.
it was my first time using a bender, and the guy who owns it was way hungover. i should have practiced once i guess but oh well, live and learn.

going with the heims joints definitely helped the flex, and tightened things up. i also installed some poly tierod spacers to help with the deadspot in my steering.

Finally got this dang thing running again! its been two years since I drove it last, longer since I've wheeled it. I've got a lot to do before I can go wheeling, but I'm really motivated now that i'm over that huge hurdle. On another note, I picked up a set of claytons rear arms and truss, so I'm on the hunt for an 8.8
Can't wait to go wheeling!!!!!!!!

Went wheeling with my brother, it was a blast! I forgot how much I love jeepin! I've got a few issues to deal with from it sitting so long, one of which is a bad transmission leak. I'm planning on going to the North Idaho Mud and Crawl in Naples, ID the end of June, should be a fun time! I want to get the few maintenance things taken care of and the 8.8 swap before then

Haven't posted in forever, a lot has happened! ZJ is long gone, got a 79 jeep cherokee on 37s now, and just picked up a 2008 WK with the 3.0 diesel. Anybody building WKs on here?
