i just picked up a home made truck bed trailer to use in the yard for misc. work, but after looking at it some it might be worth ripping out the axle to build up slowly and stick in my ZJ....maybe. from what i know its a early to late 60's F-100 pickup. drum brakes and 3.27 gears. i only have a couple pics of it, but i way hoping some of you more experienced people could tell if its a 8" or 9" by looking. not sure if i should get excited about this or not.

pics are huge so i'm linking to them...

Thats similar to the housing I was looking at under an F100 and it was an 8", still could be a 9 though. EDIT: From looking closer at the end of the tubes it doesnt look to be big bearing.

i'll have to move the axle to the garage to look at it further because my backyard is pretty flooded and muddy to climb underneath to look at it more. i have a couple more pics if anyone can tell by looking--i have little to no knowledge about these axles so i'll have to do some reading before i can tell myself.

Well now from those pics it looks like a 9", once its in the garage try getting a socket on the lower 2 nuts. Most for sure way though, once the axle is pulled... pull the chunk and measure the ring gear.

I think the old school 9's (if it is a 9) are small bearing and really low spline count (some are like 18 IIRC).

Good big bearing 9's with 31 spline shafts can be had for 200 bucks or so.

If the housing has a 2 inch wide strip going down the back of it, its a 9". Also 8 inch axle tubes tapper down from the housing to the wheel.

ah, just my luck.

i guess it will stay under the truck bed as a trailer for the rest of its days then.

i might go to one of the u-pull-its and see what i come across--i been on the hunt for a 8.8 or a 9" to build in my spare time. the only thing that sucks is we know a d35 is crap, but as soon as you say "grand cherokee axle" they want a shit load for it and there goes the brackets i need. there's no way i'm paying $300-400 for a d35 just to cut it up for the brackets and thats a big set back for me to start the build. if i wanted to spend that much money i could just order some new ones all ready to go.

Just make your own brackets or buy some if your not able. It is just as easy to make new as it is to f with cutting/grinding the old ones off.
