Well, I guess I'll start this up now.
This weekend I picked up a new future trail rig. I won't lie that it needs some work but it's not that bad at all.

82 Toyota Hilux Short Bed, Regular Cab. 22R, 4spd and a top shift t-case, 4.30 gears.

Here's the problems.

On the 25th it goes to my buddy's place to get the frame and body patched up and maybe set up the suspension, we'll see about that.

Flame away Fackers!

I kinda want a Yota to bash up on the trails too, they look like they could be a lot of fun.

Too bad you had to lose your ZJ, but congrats on the truck and good luck with it.

I've wanted a Yota for years. I learned to drive 5spd (and off road at the same time) in a 89 SR5 Ext. Cab. Loved them to death ever since.
Adam (Nine-T-1-Renegade) took away my ZJ last weekend, said to see it go that's for sure.

I'll get a 5spd in there eventually.

Carbs don't bug me. The guy fixing my frame has laid his 82 on it's side and it kept on chuggin'.
I paid $500 CND for the thing.

It is a 4cyl, I plan to gear the shit out it. 22R/22RE motors are dead nuts reiable.

Hope to have the truck at my buddy's by March to get the rust all fixed up.

Thinking about getting him to build the suspension at the same time.
Rear springs up front and 63" Chevy springs out back. Weld the diffs up and toss some used 33-35s on it and wheel it for the summer.
Here's one of the rigs he's built:

I plan to tube bed it during the next build season, right now I just need to get it running and wheelable on 35s.

As for the rust, I hate the shit for starters and I want to take care of the lil frame rot now.

POR15 is your friend. I wouldn't spend too much time trying to make it look good if you're just going to be bashing it around. Are you going to be driving it on the street much?

I don't see many 80's Yotas around here. Even the newer ones are rusted to shit - as is pretty much everything here in the salt belt. Ugh.

It's a Toyota not a Jeep :flipoff2:

The Chevy springs add about 3" of lift but after some tweaking in how they are mounted and what not it'll be around 5" total. Lots of room for some big rubber.

Way :D That'll probably be the last one you see (unless I get mine back off the ground)...they (supposedly) only made around 500 of them in '81-'82 as a kind of "test run" on the ForeRunner design. It's really nothing more than a short bed p\u w\ the frame chopped a bit, back of the cab cut off, and an all fiberglass bed\cap. The fiberglass work was actually done by Winnebago, unfortunately it's poorly designed and doesn't hold up well. I mostly like it because 1) it's really rare and 2) I beat the hell out of it for 10 years and it kept going, it's indestructable like they say in that video. Besides, it looks pretty cool for it's generation. Looks just like a Ford Bronco, just shrunk 25%.

Mine's been in the shop since Feb '02 (yes, '02). I gave it to a sort of friend (I use the term loosely) of mine to do an engine swap, put in a lift, etc. This was long before I had the facilities or confidence to try a job like that myself. Plan is to put in a V6 Vortec, auto tranny (I want to say a 350, does that sound right? I know nothing about Chevy trannys), etc. Unfortunately, I paid in advance, so now the job's half done and who knows if it'll ever be finished...Once my shop's built I'm just going to trailer it home and finish it myself.

It's probably not worth the trouble or expense, but the 22R was rebuilt by Jasper about 10K miles ago, so if you need a motor for any reason I've got a good one.

Have fun with the build up, keep us posted!

Yup, the Chevt Turbo 350 trans is fairly common and used in many off road appilcations.

I'm gonna get it running good this week. Need to swap the new carb on, do a tune up and change the oil. This is all dependent on the weather though. If it's cold and/or snowy, screw it.

Well to those asking why I'm taking so long on building this thing, I've got an answer.

1. Seems I owe taxes this year. Not a happy camper.
2. I have to pay for my trip to the Dominican.

I've commited myself to doing these things before buying anymore parts.

Well, I didn't get much work done this weekend, I worked on a friend's Jeep instead.
I'm going to start prepping it for body/frame work this week and then pull the carb off and rebuild it. I'm not looking forward to doing, it's going to be a learning experience for sure.

Friday afternoon with the help of my buddy's F150, I LITERALLY dragged the Toyota onto my street then pushed it into my drive way. It took some time and some muscle on mine and my neighbours behalfs. The wheels aren't the proper back spacing so they rub like hell on the steering arms/TREs.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v87/G2Rac/Toyota/Yota.jpg

Then on Saturday all I did was paint my steering arms and clean all the crap out of my interior. Then I helped my buddy work on his Jeep.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v87/G2Rac/Toyota/SteeringArms02.jpg

I also found out that one of the pervious owners bobbed the truck a good bit. I have to plate off and clean that up a tiny bit so I'll do that when patching my frame.

I still need to get rid of the left over fluff shit but I was loosing sun light and it started to rain so called it a night. I've got Friday and Monday off for Easter so I'll use that to get some work done.

Hammered my Ford Shock Mounts.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v87/G2Rac/Toyota/shocktowers.jpg

The truck has already been bobbed by one of the previous owners, one less thing for me to do. However, I now have no where to mount my Chevy springs rear shackle (needs to be back 4" from stock). How do I fix this? Simple, make a bumper/shackle mount. Here's a quick drawing:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v87/G2Rac/Toyota/Carb03.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v87/G2Rac/Toyota/Carb04.jpg

I also popped the fenders off too so I can do some body and paint work. Found out that the passenger side rocker is toast. I'm thinking I'll just cut both rockers out and weld some box plate in their place instead.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v87/G2Rac/Toyota/Fenders01.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v87/G2Rac/Toyota/Fenders02.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v87/G2Rac/Toyota/Fenders03.jpg

I tried to completely disassyemble the Chevy leafs so I could paint them and replace the bushings, didn't go as planned. Bolts are seized in both bushings on bolt leafs. Tried to beat and torch them out to no avail. I will try air tools on them and see if that works. Couldn't get the center pin out of one, it's spinning in the leaf so I'll have to work on getting it out.
So once they are apart I will paint them all up and replace what I need too. I also want to put some UHMW-PE(Ultra High Molecular Weight - PolyEthylene) between the leafs.

That's because you have that little tiny engine in that big engine compartment. In my DD, the headers took 8 hours to install, (the book rate for the job was actually 6 hrs, but the guy who did it was not familiar with the car). I paid a pro because it would have been a horrible job without a lift.

Given the age of these Yota's, it's probably only a bitchy job because every bolt is rusted to the point where it needs to be cut off. It certainly does not seem like an access problem. Maybe your stock manifold was taken off recently for some reason and you got lucky.

Some REAL progress was made this weekend. Fist Andy and I removed the flat bed from the truck and took the gas tank out. Had to cold chisel a captive nut out to drop it which really friggin sucked.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v87/G2Rac/Toyota/NoBed001.jpg

From there we had time to kill till my buddy showed up to help with some more work so we did some less important things.
Half doors!

Grinder with cut off wheels made pretty quick work of it. I chopped up some 3/8" bar I had to make braces/stiffeners for inside the door and then started to plate it off.

Around this point in time, Dylan showed up. Huge thanks to time for making the drive out and staying till 1AM last night fixing my frame.
Here's what it looked like when we started.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v87/G2Rac/Toyota/PassengerSideFrame01.jpg

Then Dylan started cutting out the frame, we started with the driver's side.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v87/G2Rac/Toyota/DriverSideFrame02.jpg

Patch panels were made and Dylan welded them in place. As a note, having breakers in your house that can handle a welder are nice. I kept tripping mine every few minutes and had to go reset thus ADDING time to the whole process.

BAM, finished! No more hole filled rusty frame.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v87/G2Rac/Toyota/DriverSideFrame06.jpg

Then we started on the passenger side.

We had to almost totally remake this section of the frame. The only orginal part left is the top and maybe a quater of the outside.

Around this point in time Chris showed up to check on our progress and of course horse around. I also through the Grand Cherokee seats in for shits.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v87/G2Rac/Toyota/Chris02.jpg

Chris had to test the Flintstone braking system. I don't think it will pass inspection though.

Back to work. Welding started.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v87/G2Rac/Toyota/PassengerSideFrame05.jpg

Now I stopped taking pictures for a bit because I was tired and simply forgot but here's the finished product with some black paint on it for now. I'll under coat it in the next week days.

This week I'll finish making the tube doors, still need to put a cup holder in them, plate them and mount things like lock cylinders and door handles.
Also I'm going to start in on welding the new floors in.

I'll get done what I can but I'm busy since I'm getting ready for a trip to the Dominican. I leave on Saturday morning :D

Still lovin this thread, im kinda glad he decided to keep the old frame together, makes it more of a buildup instead of a mix of fabricated and factory.

Considering how my buddy's welder kept kicking my braker off every 10-15 minutes, building a whole new rear frame would have taken HOURS more.
Besides, it's beef enough and supports the weight of the truck so that's good enough for me. Maybe one day I'll back half it.

I'll have some parts of the Island Combo this year, welded rear and 37" Iroks. Don't plan to put an exo cage on it for a while.

Thanks.
Again it was easist to cut it out and burn the new plate in.

Right now I'm looking for a welder of my own as my friends really isn't all that great for welding my floors in place.
I could just use pop rivets and seam sealer to put the floor in instead :smt112

Not much to update to be honest. Been on vacation and camping (with some wheeling mixed in) so the truck is really feeling negeleted.
I've done a few small things like sorted out some wiring issues.
I'll be back to working on it tomorrow and we'll see what gets done.

Did some more chopping on the Toyota today.
Finished cutting the floors out of it.

Plus I cut the fire wall so I can tub it for the tires.

I personally didn't think this was enough room. The wheel wells still looked a lil small to me so I stood back and looked at the truck.

I can fit in my wheel wells now, should work great for the rubber I'm planning.
I'll be welding the floors in this Saturday :D

Plus I chopped that damn cow catcher off.

Owning a 82 Toy 8 years ago, I still miss it. If its the original engine you will have the dome top pistons and double roller timing chain. I had a RV cam in mine and Thorley tri-y header. The head was milled .010 fo a little more compression. It was 195 ish in each cylinder. 6 inches of lift, 35's, Detroits F/R and 5.29's. Never even broke a Birfield, lucky I guess.

Anyway, keep plugging along, can't wait to see the end product.

Locked98GC, thanks, that's some good info. I'm going to be welded eventually, the front axle is a bitch to take apart so that one will wait a lil bit. The rear is happening on Wednesday. Getting closer and closer to finishing.

Yea tell me about it. I need at least one trip in my own rig this year. Can't exactly beat on Kyra's TJ too much.

I'm trying to locate a gas tank for the thing, pain in the ass, I've called every shop in Toronto with almost no luck.

Floors are ready to be welded in. Picked up 12' of 2x3x1/8 tube for new rockers. Hope to weld it all in in the the next week or so. Working on paint the exterior. Picking up a gas tank and ordering an electric fuel pump and FPR tomorrow.

I'm selling the Toyota. I don't have the time/money to finish it right now. It's a much more financially wise decision for me to get rid of it.

Chop the axles out and sold them yesterday. All in all I didn't lose too much.
