Well Ive been meaning to start this journal since I joined but could never think of a good title. As you can see, I gave up. Nothing clever.

Ive owned numerous Jeeps through the last 14 years. The current 97 ZJ for the last 3 years. I dont have any pics of it stock but Im sure you know what it wouldve looked like. Its a 97 Laredo, 4.0l, 42re, 242, LPD30, D35. Heres a pic of it with a SkyJacker 3" lift and some PJ 31's.

This is my backyard. Really.

This is how it sits today on 33" MT Baja radial MTZ's.

My answer to quick discos.

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f317/corrupt143/000_0405.jpg

Yeah, its funny. Those seats are one of my favorite mods. You dont realize how much work it is holding yourself in one place in the factory seats. Theyre so much less work. I had them left over from one of my other toys and decided to try them out. I ended up having to mod the factory brackets to get them to fit right but it wasnt much work. I highly suggest them. The only problem Ive had with them is every once in a while the leg bolsters clip a nut on the way in or out, but its worth the few seconds of gut pain. LOL

Sweet jeep man, love clean rigs that still get wheeled.

As many rigs that are here with wagon wheels and dented bodywork, it's nice to see something lookin' really clean yet still gets used and abused.

Actually theres a few dents, gouges and tons of scratches. I just try to stay on top of it, I use touch up paint and a Sharpie. It looks good until you look really close. Luckily, one of my friends is a pro body guy and he helps me keep it " lookin' smooooth". It also helps that I have a buffer. Yeah, I can kinda be a little girl about my rig, :gayflag:, but I love her.

Theyre the Corbeau CR1's. They have an adjustable seat back and (as an option) inflatable lumbar support. To get them to sit right I had to add some height to the stock mounts in the rear. I just bolted a 1.5" square tube to the OEM piece and then bolted the seat to it. In the front I just threaded the OEM stud on the drivers side into the seats mounting hole and had to make an offset bracket for the other. The passenger seat was just the opposite.

Brake Lines

I had really good luck building my own setup at the local race shop. The only thing was, that I had to go with 24" because the next size was 19" or something close to that. I also had to clearance my calipers ever so slightly. $40 total spent, for just the front.

WOW! I just looked them up, that is expensive. I got these about 4-5 years ago when they first came out ( as a matter of fact, I some of the first run) and they werent that much.

And as far as the nut thing, just giving you guys the heads up. I was pissed the first few times it happened, now I just laugh and think "Dumb ass, :shake: you should know better."

the lines themselves were off the shelf, then i just bought universal pieces for everything else (banjo bolt, etc) I'd snap some pics, but i sold my digital camera. Take the old original lines with you, when you pick out some new ones.

I picked up a true Hi-Lift jack today at my Local ACE Hardware for $48. They had a few of them back in the tractor area hidden in a corner. Its funny because Im always back in that area and never spotted them. Good price and NO shipping, I lucked out, Im glad I hadnt ordered one yet.

This is part update part "rant".

Wednesday- Turned out to be a nice day, 50 some degrees, so I decided to start getting some things done since GSMW was sneaking up on me. I mostly got some stuff painted and cleaned up. I also fabed up a rad support/ tow point.

Thursday- I decided to get a head start on installing my lift. I put on my front RE HD track bar, front sway bar endlinks, all 4 RE SF LCA's and rear RE SF UCA's. The only real problem with any of this was I had to drill out the swaybar some for the swaybar conversion bolts to fit. This wouldnt normally of been a problem except Im at my GF's house and I have my 18 volt Dewalt drill with me and only had 1 good battery, which decided to take a shit on me in the middle of the project. It would only work for about 45-60 seconds at a time. Ace hardware wanted $90 for a new battery. So I bought a corded Milwaukee instead and ordered a couple of batteries online.

Next, I turned my attention to the rear TB. It was starting to get dark but I figured " Why not, its only 2 bolts and everything else went 'kinda' smooth." First I tried to loosen the frame side t-55 torx, nothing. So I used a breaker bar and a socket and loosened the nut on the back side. Cool. So I moved on to the axle side torx. Twisted up 2 bits and completely sheared 1. I then decided to just remove the UCA and attack the nut on the backside. Pulled and pulled some more until I broke my 1/2" breaker bar. PB Blasted it and I decided to wait till morning when I could see better and get a fresh start.

Today- Tried to break the nut free again. Nothing, so I take a closer look. WTF!!!!!! The damn nut is spot welded in there. That explains ALOT(that makes absolutely no sense to me, the UCA has a loose nut that just sits in the frame rail and the TB frame side nut comes loose.) "NOW WHAT!!!!!!" Went to my buddies shop and we heated and beat the shit out of it. Still nothing. Then the MAC guy happened to stop by. Their HD torx took it right out. My friend ended up buying a set since they worked so good. So I put it back in for the drive home and stopped by the hardware store and picked up 2 new hex head bolts to replace the stupid torx bolts with. Smooth sailing right? Nope! The frame side nut comes loose but the bolt is frozen in the bushing sleeve. Heat, a mini sledge and lots of bleeding later, it was still there. I would of sawzall'd it out of there if I wouldve just bought that damn $90 battery. I ended up using a right angle grinder with a cut off wheel. Space was TIGHT! I had to cut both sides of the bolt of course.

Damn rear track bar took up a whole day!!!!!

:flipoff2:DAMN YOU TORX BOLTS!!!!:flipoff2:

Took her for a test drive, rides good. Pulled into the driveway with a smile on my face thinking about installing my springs tomorrow. Radiator is leaking again, bad. First time in months, glad I ordered one when I noticed it the first time. Springs are gonna have to wait.

:flipoff2:DAMN YOU TOO, MURPHYS' LAW!!!!:flipoff2:

This is my new front axle for now. HP 30 with 4.10's. It came with all the stuff on it. Im gonna be selling the fixed RE SF LCA's and the RE HD track bar and bracket. So hit me up if your interested. I'll post a "for sale" thread once I pick it up next Saturday. Im gonna be keeping the extended brake lines and JKS discos.

Very nice Chris. How did you luck out with the HP30 fully loaded?

And about those JKS rear LCAs, I found a deal on some RE Adjustables so I wont be needing them anymore. Thanks for the offer though.

Found it on NAXJA. He lives in Cincinnati, OH and he didnt want to part it out or ship it, so I made him an offer and he took it. So we're meeting half way (Indy, 2 hours each way).

About the arms, no problem, he still hasnt got back in touch with me. Maybe he sold them out from under me. Time will tell. Im just about to say screw it anyway, I need some front upper adjustables YESTERDAY.

Are you running some sort of spacers in the rear? Or are my eyes fooling me cause in that last pic in the first post, it looks like the rear tires stick out quite a bit.

corrupt143
04-16-2007, 10:37 PM
Good eye. 1.25" Spidertrax all the way around. I wanted a wider stance with the extra height.

And to anyone who wants to point out I'm missing a lug nut on each wheel, I know. Theyre my locks and I've been taking off my wheels every other day lately so I've just been leaving them off.

An update.

I finally installed my RE 4.5" springs. Got all 8 of my RE SF adj. control arms on. Extended brakelines (which with in 5 min, my tire took of the protective coating), Pro Comp ES 9000 shocks and SS, shock conversion and BPE's all on.

Well I was planning on going with the D44 to get me through GSMW, thats changed. Found an 8.8 with 4.10's, to match my HP30 w/ 4.10's. I should have this in the next week or two. Then I'll just start cutting the brackets off the 35 and weld them up. That should be a fun day, I'll make sure to get some hover Jeep shots.

I still have to figure out what I'm building for a TC skid, lots of ideas, just nothing that has stuck yet. I have had a few made of cardboard though. Maybe thats what I'll run ;)

Oh yeah, I still have to install my new rad, B&M trans cooler, make some lines to the AUX cooler, trans filter and change all my fluids. AND my draglink tie rod end at the pitman arm is toast. I have been thinking about the 1-ton steering upgrade, I guess theres no better time like the present.

Yeah, its fun. When the people that built this house dug the basement, they just dumped all the dirt out back. Then they just left it alone for years so it was completely overgrown. A week and half of clearing and this is what I got. The rest of the property is FLAT. I have to keep changing the layout though, cause I get bored (read: SHOVEL). I play out here alot. Not to mention, every time I change something on the rig. Got to test it, right?

I just ordered the Baja MTZ's in 33x12.50x15.... looking forward to getting them. How do you like them?

corrupt143
04-29-2007, 02:25 AM
As I mentioned in your thread on backspacing, I love em. Although I did go mudding Friday evening and we had run through this one area alot. So as we started throwing more mud out of it we started to run into some sand. The sand and mud combo was pretty hard to clear out. It took lots of wheel speed to keep them clean. But just mud, no problems. It actually felt like I was running slicks on a few runs till I nailed it. LOL.

corrupt143
04-29-2007, 02:38 AM
MUD SUCKS!!!! No more for me. Maybe I'm just getting to old. But the 7 hours of cleaning mud out of every little nook and cranny on my rig, isnt worth the 1 hour of play. Rinsing the under side wasnt working with a sprinkler, so I had to crawl under and spray it numerous times. Now dont get me wrong, I'll go through a mud hole to get where I need to go, but no more going out just to play in mud. I'm over it!

None the less, I think you'll really enjoy them. I'm just really impressed with how aggressive they are, yet super quiet. My old PJ's made quite the racket compared to these.

Carnage. I did this trying to drive in reverse through a rock garden.

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f317/corrupt143/Jeep/000_0621.jpg

My alternator took a shit on the way home about 15 miles after I left,so I drove with in 10 miles of my house on battery power. 10 miles without any headlights. Never would of guessed I'd of made it that far. Called my GF dad and he brought me another battery to make it the rest of the way. I lost both rear bumpstops some where and the front 2 fell out and are bouncing around in the coils. Lost a weight on the driveshaft. Tore up a LCA mount on the front axle. Dented the rear quarter panel and I think I broke something in the 30. Not sure what, but it makes some serious noise now.

I also won a $50 gift certificate from Kevins. Thanks Kevin.

GSMW was a blast! Ready to go again.

Well I finally decided to get off my ass and get some stuff done today since Ive been slacking since GSMW.

Disassembled, cut, wire wheeled and painted the HP D30. I also fabbed up some new OTA TB brackets and got them tacked in place. These will be cut down and boxed in once I get the TB placement figured out. They're tall and wide but I figured its better to have them to big than to small.

I also got the new tie rod all worked out. I didnt have time to weld it yet. I got the hex threaded inserts from SpderTrax. Great deal at $10 a piece, IMO.

I'm gonna start work on the 8.8 this weekend but first Ive got to pull my D35 and do a drum to disc conversion on my lil brothers XJ. He needs a brake job ASAP and I told him "no sense in dropping cash into those drums" when I have what he needs for the swap.

corrupt143

Got the LP D30 pulled.

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f317/corrupt143/Jeep%20build/000_0637.jpg

These pics are of the carnage the rock quarry @ the Badlands did to the D30. Almost all the teeth on the drivers side were broken and a few on the passenger side.. ( Adam and Barry should get a good laugh).

I'll a better pic tomorrow when I pull out the carrier.

On a side note. Guys who have done the 8.8 swap, how much additional lift did you get when you did the swap? I'm figuring 3/8"-1/2". Is this about right?

pardon me for asking but are you running your front CA's at stock length?

corrupt143
06-18-2007, 03:06 AM
Theyre pretty close to stock length. I run them short, so when under full stuff, the 33's just clear the rocker and stay out of the shit up front. It works well for me.

corrupt143
07-12-2007, 01:43 AM
I've been really busy lately, but I got some shit done. HP D30, TB, draglink and tie rod are squared away.

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f317/corrupt143/Jeep%20build/000_0678.jpg

D35 is out.

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f317/corrupt143/Jeep%20build/000_0676.jpg

I reused the coil buckets and UCA mounts. I ended up making new LCA mounts, I didnt like the stock ones, and I modded the shock mounts. Everything tacked in place. I'll finish the welding up tomorrow.

LA's are the next fab project. I'll probably wheel it the rest of this summer then bust into the LA's sometime this winter. I'm gonna be building the arms and using Claytons cross member and brackets. I'm gonna run 35's at this height, maybe .5-1" higher.

I've been following your build up for a while, I gotta say, it's looking great. What are you doing as far as traction devices in the new axles?

I really want some air lockers but thats some serious dough. So the plan for now, since this is a street driven rig, is to run a Zexel-Torsen Limited Slip in the 8.8. They came in the 98- present Ford Ranger FX4's. This page has some info on it.

http://www.angelfire.com/my/fastcar/diffey.html

I'm still undecided on the front. I had been planning on the PowerTrax No-Slip, but that write up changed my mind. Any suggestions?

that zexel tortion says that it "can be fragile; 500ft/lb torque limit on OEM units" say your 4.0L has 250 ftlbs x 2.74 first gear x 2.72 4lo = 1863.2 ftlbs max input going into the 8.8 sounds like it might kill that zexel, unless I'm forgetting something...

you could get a Detroit trutrac (sounds like it the same thing)

Hopefully they mean 500ftlbs from the motor, before gearing is taken into account. That doesn't make much sense though, because a unit standing up to a motor putting down 500ftlbs isn't really fragile. I'm just thinking outloud at this point. I had a Detroit Truetrac, as somebody else said, you could go that route.

I was thinking engine torque also, but Jordan got me thinking. With some research, I came up with this.

Some guy from the Ranger station:

When I asked why the axle had been taken out, he told me a tale of Ford having to recall a lot of the FX4’s. It seems that people were taking them off road and blowing up the Torsen diff’s. Imagine that people actually tried to drive their trucks off road, what a concept. With that little tidbit of information in hand I did some research on the web and found an article about it. It stated that Ford had recalled a little over 1000 of them. And I guess in the usual corporate save a buck effort to save on the labor costs. They just swapped out the entire axle assembly, drum to drum.
I e-mailed Zexel, the diff’s maker, with the “lot” number on the side of the unit and was told that it was indeed one of the “suspect” units. But they did say if I used it in a car or truck with an automatic transmission it would probably be OK. Probably OK? I didn’t like the sound of that

So it looks like I may be spending some actual cash, its too bad cause I could've picked one up for $70.

After grinding out every other tooth on the tone ring (Thanks Jordan) and trimming down my LCA skids, I got the 8.8 under my rig.

I still need to run the all the brake lines, fill with gear lube and tighten everything up. Plus I've got something to try with the drive shaft, more on this later.

corrupt143

This is a little brake tech for you guys planning on doing the 8.8 swap with short arms.

After hours of digging through bins of soft brake lines I found the perfect one. Yes, I know companies like RE sell them, but they just dont work quite right on the 8.8. The drivers side line out is right up against the upper CA bracket, sooooo....

Heres a pic of the stock ford line, the stock jeep and then the one I found (left to right).

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f317/corrupt143/Jeep%20build/000_0713.jpg

This line is almost 22" long with no hard line. It, like the RE and stock Jeep, has the T-fitting built in with the vent tube hole. The difference is this one has the tube cut out on the bottom angled and the drivers side out completely misses the CA bracket. It also has a bunch of wire clips to run your ABS wires with it.

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f317/corrupt143/Jeep%20build/000_0715.jpg

The end that hooks up to the line from the master cylinder will go in the mounting hole but I found it not to be the way I wanted so I ground down one edge to get it not to twist the line when mounted to the axle. (As a side note, I did ground the first hex down round but this wasnt really necessary)

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f317/corrupt143/Jeep%20build/000_0718.jpg

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f317/corrupt143/Jeep%20build/000_0720.jpg

Here it is connected to the axle. I used the Jeep breather tube to connect it.

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f317/corrupt143/Jeep%20build/000_0721.jpg

And up top.

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f317/corrupt143/Jeep%20build/000_0722.jpg

You'll notice how it runs right along with the UCA. This shot was taken with the axle at full droop. The coils are off/below the spring posts.

Anyway, I got it at Advanced. Its part number is H38636 made by Tru-Torque. It fits the 89-96 Dodge Dakota and the 94-96 Dodge Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500. They want $38 for it but I told them I'd pay $22 for it and they accepted ( but I do get alot of stuff from them).

Funny thing is, I've got a Dakota (w/ the 5.2 :D) and all I needed to do was look under it to find the line I needed.

For the drivers side caliper brake line, I just ordered another passenger side line. It worked out well.

ok here are some pic from back when I did the swap:
by wrapping the rubber hoses this way they are not interfering with anything around them and still have lots of movement when you have to pull them off.

drivers side I made a small Z bracket so that the hose would bolt to my bracket
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c367/djjordache/4wdswap/IMG_0468.jpg

Passenger side has a straight bracket so the hose will bolt to it

I knew with rotating my LCA brackets forward and extending my arms my driveshaft would be maxed out. I'd love to just get a new shaft made up but with the plan of LA's in the near future, I feel it would just be a waste of cash. So here is my ghetto fab version, we'll see how long it lasts. I've gotta go get some hardware to bolt it up (otherwise it would already be on)and then I can test everything out.

Then right back in. I still have some little shit to do. I need to adjust the rear TB, finish up the front TB bracket, alignment, run the ABS wires, hook up the front DS and check all the bolts n nuts under her. It also looks like I may have to change another ball joint.

Plus I have to install this to get rid of my exhaust leak.

Ive been testing out everything since I finished up axles and I found the new weak point. Twisted and ripped the factory HP 30 passenger side LCA mount at the axle. I shouldve built some new ones like I did for the 8.8.

I destroyed an axle u-joint a little while back so I decided to just pull the HP 30 and go ahead and fix the ripped LCA mount on the axle.

Destroyed u-joint and ABS tone ring. This outer is now in my "summer" axle shafts, the winter shafts have complete tone rings.

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f317/corrupt143/Jeep%20build/000_0794.jpg

Heres the newly shaped coil buckets and the old sway bar mounts. I wanted to get rid of the bar pin and bring the LCA mounts up outta the way.

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f317/corrupt143/Jeep%20build/000_0806.jpg

Fab'd up some new sway bar mounts. The others were cobbled together. These are out of .25".

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f317/corrupt143/Jeep%20build/000_0808.jpg

I then made my new LCA mounts out of 3/16". I cut the cam bolt adjuster off the old LP30, since the HP30 doesnt have any adjustment, and slotted the holes. I also built in the CA skids, just like the 8.8 brackets. Here they are tacked together.

The next round of mod's will be starting VERY SOON! This last "fix" took me awhile to get around to. Things have been hectic, to say the least. So while my rig was in the air, I let my friend with the TJ use my tires/wheels. He liked them so much, he made me a very reasonable offer for them. I didnt have any plans to sell them anytime soon but...

315/75-16 (34.6") MTZ's will be the new rubber with a 16x10 rim. Im gonna toss in a 1" BB and go ahead and fab up my front LA's. I wasnt planning on building my LA's till much later this winter, so fronts will have to do for now.

The steel's already on order so, sometime soon, I'll get started on this.

I decided to go out back and give my rig a good flogging. We got back there around 5 pm and quit sometime around midnight. Owens crater had about a foot of water in it when we started which quickly turned to quick sand ( I did get stuck, once, and had to have some help getting out).

I beat the piss out of her and she held up well, no major problems. Carnage total: rear bumper cover destroyed, broken tail light and a front broken (twisted) driveshaft. The DS makes me laugh, I did it on the same exact run my friend with the TJ twisted his in half on. Hmmmmmm.

I was cleaning my air filter and decided to go ahead and clean my throttle body. Ive never liked the neck down in it so I decided to correct that issue. Heres how it went.

I took all the sensors and throttle plate off. The gasket is the same size as the manifold opening. So this is how much material needed to come out.

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f317/corrupt143/Jeep%20build/000_0869.jpg

Scribed and ready to go.

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f317/corrupt143/Jeep%20build/000_0871.jpg

I put a rasp in the drill press and made sure the tray was square with the bit. I then set the depth to only go as deep as the bottle neck. This was important so the TB plate would still fit. I then moved the TB around the bit so I got a nice round hole. Becareful with the rasps, they can remove lots of material REAL fast.

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f317/corrupt143/Jeep%20build/000_0873.jpg

Heres how it came out.

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f317/corrupt143/Jeep%20build/000_0875.jpg

I then repeated the set up with a sanding drum to "fine tune" my work.

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f317/corrupt143/Jeep%20build/000_0879.jpg

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f317/corrupt143/Jeep%20build/000_0880.jpg

As you can see in the last picture, there was still a small ridge in some places. So I cleaned them up with a flexible rotary shaft tool. No more ridges.

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f317/corrupt143/Jeep%20build/000_0881.jpg

I then used some 330 grit sand paper and gave it a quick sanding. Followed by some scotch brite.

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f317/corrupt143/Jeep%20build/000_0882.jpg

I didnt think you didnt know how with your wealth of knowledge.

I didnt take any pics. Hands were a mess. Hardest part was installing my Superior axle tube seals. It was beyond simple, just sucks having to pull the carrier. Its in and works great.

The $400 does indeed suck when you can get a full carrier Detroit Truetrac for less than that. I dont understand how the lunch boxes cost more! I really wanted the Truetrac but I didnt feel like going through all the hassle of setting up the gears when Im just gonna have to do it again when I re-gear (and I didnt have the $ to re-gear now). If I had to spend more than $350 I would have gone with the TT though, good thing I won at $300.

4.5" of lift. No lift spacers. 5/8" front wheel spacers and 1 1/4" rear wheel spacers.

Nope, I got some JKS's now. When I did have them though, they worked fine for what they were. A little noisy when they were hooked up but did the job.

Had an idea the other day & your post reminded me of it. I was going to talk the Mrs. into a "rock garden" in the backyard.
How long would the marriage last if she caught me wheelin in it? :toimonst:
So, that was the end of that thought.

Actually my GF likes it. Im home more and she says it keeps me occupied so I dont bitch at her when Im bored ( because I just go play or build). A rock garden is in the works here too, biggest problem is theres NO rocks around here and Im not paying for ROCKS!
