Recently purchased a 90% complete project ZJ and I am glad I found this site. Had to get rid of the YJ for something that the kids and wife could enjoy as well. I'm looking forward to getting my hunk on the trail and a lot of the info I've found on here has already helped a ton.
Here's a couple pics of the money pit ( so far )........

I know, I know. :finga: It ain't done yet though. I've already put in a metric sh*tload of hours on her. Still plenty of wrenching, cutting, welding, bleeding, cussing, drinking, fabricating, more cussing, bleeding, and eventually LOTS of wheeling to do. So bought, yes. Built, not yet.
Besides, After 7 years and another metric as*load of $$$$$$$$$$$ and sweat on my dearly departed YJ:smt089 , I figured I earned a little "headstart"

What are the arms? Can you get any pics of the suspension set up?

Does it have short arms on the back? Sorry to hear you left the world of 4x4's with frames.

Immediate future has me replacing 98% of the steering. Need to get the angles back to a streetable geometry. This thing is scary as all hell to drive on the road right now. Going for high steer, definitley.
Then I'm fabbing new mounts for springs/shocks up front. Need to move them back to account for the front axle going forward.
Then, I need to fab up some replacement control arms to carry with. The PO wasn't the greatest welder in the world, but they'll last a good while longer I bet.
THEN......well, you get the idea.:smt040

I'll be taking pics as I get her back into shape. right now the suspension is a little "askew" from the axle coming forward. My goal is to end up with something I can wheel the ever-lovin' piss out of and still get the wife/kids/beer to and from safely.

Nah, This is just another chance to learn how to do things "different" I loved my YJ, but this thing will be sick when I'm done. Dare I say? Frames are for :gayflag: ! .....Unless of course I could install one on my ZJ.

Fuck dude - we have three Jeeps. A '96 XJ 4.0, a '96 ZJ 4.0 and the '98 ZJ 5.9. All three of those mother fuckers leak - from the axles, from the transmissions, from the rear main seals...

Finding a someplace on these things that DON'T leak seems to be more difficult :smt095

I call it the Jeep undercarriage corrosion protection system (JUCPS) :D

nice lookin! yeah make sure you get plenty o pics. I'm curious of the front axle wheelbase extension setup, how is the steering done? it looks like it is still using just the steering gearbox and no assist, maybe a reverse throw gearbox? just curious as it is a more unique setup. Eat shit and welcome to MC!:welcome:

yeah I thought it looked familiar! man has that ZJ been around! LIKE A RECORD!http://temp.corvetteforum.net/c5/pigface/Huh/o-face.jpg

That's the one. A kid from Sacramento bought it and did a lot of the "homemade stuff". Overall I'm really happy with the base I started with. With some $$ and hours it should be a great rig for some years to come. It looks like the first owner had it pretty road friendly. The second dude trailered it everywhere( didn't have to worry about going over 5 mph) , thus the scary handling on road.

Hey whats up man, thats my old jeep!!! I guess the guy I sold it to decided to get rid of it huh? Dam its looks sick!!!!! It was a good rig to me, never gave me to much trouble and I beat the shit out of it. ya looks like the rear main is leaking, i just had that fixed about a year ago thats weird its leaking again. I miss it I hope you have alot of fun with it and try to get some wheelin pics for me. Heres some pics and vids from when I had it on 33's. I hope you get the steering taken care of. When I had it The steering was so bad I litteraly almost crashed and died everytime I drove it on the road, it was so scary.

HAHA! That's cool. Nice to know you're around. Yeah, Brian's ( the dude that bought it from you) wife and daughter decided they weren't into wheeling as much as they thought they would be. So he's building a single seat tube buggy, and I got your jeep. I might PM you sometime and ask some ?'s about her. Brian didn't seem to know much about some stuff. It makes sense now if you just sold it to him a year or so ago. Sweet videos. I'll probably save those for "archive footage" if it's cool w/ you. I'll certainly get you some pics and video of wheelin' her from the rubicon and No. Nevada this spring.

Right now the stock steering box is moved forward and the rest is........how shall we say..........nothing to be admired. I'll post a thread with each project I start. Which leads me to my first question. Is there a good swap for the stock steering box? I know the 5.2 is the same 318ci that sits in the dodges. Any better units that are a direct replacement?

When I hear bought not built, it's usually people laughing at someone who bought because they dont have the skill to do it themselves. This guy seems to have plenty of know how to do the same thing to it from stock, so I don't see why theres such a problem with that aspect. Also...his is sponsored by his own wallet...in a different sense. I mean in the end the money still came out of his pocket to buy it.

Anyways man, you gotta check out the GSR (Grand Slam Rubicon) forum on here, its an annual event starting last year, of Grand Cherokees running the rubicon. I didn't make it last time, but this time for sure. Going to be a blast.

Yeah, GSR sounds like a good time. Done the Jambo 6-7 times ( plus random trips through with friends). I'm anxious to see how different the ZJ is from my other rigs.
Now......As for "bought not built" goes? I've spent more time wrenching on rigs ( from my old 85 blazer on 44's ( built by me, in high school) to my current F-350 psd on 37's ( also built up by me) to my last wheeler, 92 YJ (streched, coilovers all around, 60rear, 44fr, on 37's ( guess what? built by ..........me) So my first instinct is to tell you to eat a dick. But then. You might not understand what it's like to be a "grown up" with 2 young children and an 11 hour a day job. So yes, I had the chance to "buy" a rig that wouldn't eat up time I could spend with my kids actually on the trail.....................................Nah..... ................EAT A DICK works.

Thanks PUMA297 Didn't want to rant, sorry.

It really does give you a head start on the building to buy one that's already started. I didn't have to search for axles ( just finish the suspenion), or the mess of gearing them. There's still PLENTY of work to do and I'll post up progress with pics as it goes. Now....if I could just double my cashflow......Maybe mr. "bought not built, boo"'s wallet is looking for anther rig to sponsor.:shake: You know, me being all helpess and such.
