axle looks like a d44

Thats what i thought but the d35 ubolts from the kit fit the axle, is there any other way to tell without poppin the cover? or pop the cover and not bother anything to tell?

what kit?

Rough country 4.5in

why would you need to take off the diff cover (i believe thats what youre talking about) to install or make sure your u bolts fit? if they fit then it should be alright.

no i meant taking the diff cover off to determine what axle it is, im concidering a locker but want to be positive the rear that i have

ohhh!... well you put u bolt in there so i got confused on everything lol. its a d44 and if you want to make sure for yourself, look for the tag that should be on the outside on the differential. no need to remove the cover just to see what axle it is... you can also use this.

That looks like a 44 to me.... Which makes you a seriously lucky bastard, considering those often go for 300 each, let alone 100 for the whole rig.

Yea if its a d44 im gonna be a happy mo fo, but before i order a locker i need to find out for sure what it is....actually since its a prized piece of gear....i mite just love on it forever and ever lol
sorry for bringin the cherokee over here but naxja blows, they dont really care about people with questions, Jeep horizons is pretty and this one is very helpful ive done a lot of reading here, especially on the 42re aw4 trans compairisons

NP207 - "Command-Trac" part-time only - 2.61:1 ratio low range - used 84-87
NP231 - "Command-Trac" part-time only - 2.72:1 ratio low range - shift pattern 2H - 4H - N - 4L - used 87-01

NP228/NP229 - "Selec-Trac" - 4Hi(full-time) - N - 4Lo (part-time) - used 84-87
NP242 - "Selec-Trac" part-time OR full-time - 2.72:1 ratio low range - shift pattern 2wd - 4part-time - 4full-time - N - 4LO - used 87-01

i can eliminate the 242 and the 228 and 229 so its either a 207 or 231....the little badge is gone

It looks similar to my d44 that was rescude from a donor XJ. You should be able to find numbers stamped on the diff that can help verfiy that it is d44 and what gears came stock. If it is a standard you probably have 3.05s if it is an auto then you will most likely have 3.55's. Either way you should look at changing the gears when you do the locker to help with the taller tires.

You should also look at the front axle and see if it is a high pinion, if so it makes it so much the better deal. Got to love XJ's and ZJ's in the box (wood tone trim), classic.

the front will be high pinion for sure and yeah your a lucky bastid for getting the whole thing for 100 with a factory 44 rear! if I had to guess and you have the 4.0L I' might say the 231 but maybe get a pic of the tcase

Yea its a high pinion front, the lift and tires werent included in the 100 dollar deal if anyone is confused, the gears say 3 54 and some other numbers i didnt see anywhere saying it was a dana 44 stamped however, i can get a pic of the tcase here soon, it took me a couple months to get it that far, school and i work weekends kinda takes away time to do anything, thanks guys for the responses
