Finally got some motivation to do some work on meh heep.
Driver side 35spline stub was rubbing my hubs, causing them to turn to lock while driving...so I shaved it down a bit.

maxx I know what you mean by wanting to sell it. you've looked at it for so long from working on it your ready to move on. That and its kind of smart to try to get rid of it now before you start to tear up the sheet metal on it from wheeling it hard. We all know how ruff those curbs can be on your 40's :)

finally got around to do some things today... FINALLY bought longer bolts for the diff cover and installed those, so now there isnt only 3 bolts holding it on with one thread each.

also got the bolts for my lower bumpstops(thanks fuzzy!) today so I will be installing those at some point. I also found a loading ramp to flex on and nothing really binds as I can see, I wish i had my own ramp to flex on at my house...ugh..

Gunna change some things with my ram/ram mount hopefully...I plan on going wheeling soon!

damn, that would drive me crazy having tools laying everywhere!! But I use my tools 5 days a week, every week, so I know where everything is at, or at least where it should be... and letting my tools rust would give me a stroke, I have WAY to much money invested to leave them in the driveway, but i guess thats what lifetime warranties are for!!

Finally got around to workin on some things that I needed to do on my Jeep.

First was to change the hydro assist mount on the tierod from sheer to tension.

http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa45/zj95maxx/100_0113.jpg

I was low on materials, no drill bits, and losing daylight. I improvised and just welded on some coil over tabs to the original bracket, I know someone will call me out on it, but it is what I had and I think it will hold up fine.

Knocked out one of the two rear bumpstops. Angled tube is for support.
http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa45/zj95maxx/100_0138.jpg

here is approx. where it will go, welded the tube to 1/4 2"wide plate for a better welding surface. Gives me about 4 1/2 inches of uptravel, right before the shock should bottom out.

Looks nice and stout!

How much distance is there between the bumpstop and coil spring? It looks like it was mounted near the factory location. My coil spring would have rubbed the factory bumpstop when flexing if I kept it. Although my axle is pushed back a bit and gives a nice bow to my spring. Hopefully you won't run into that issue.

EDIT: Dammit, I might be confusing myself with the idea of putting the bumpstop inside the coil. I can't remember now.

What would it be ticketed for? Your ZJ would be fine in NY, and I was under the impression that VA laws are pretty lax, too...

1fox2go
01-07-2009, 04:21 PM
It depends on who the cop is. Most are cool, they are more interested in drunk drivers and the rice rockets.

If he wanted to be an asshole he could get ticket you for altered suspension, altered exhaust, and tires stick out too far. (not saying maxx's tires stick out far)

My jeeps CPS quit working and had to push mine off the road, 4 state police officers stopped by and didnt say anything except "Damn! Thats one hell of a winch! Call the city police if you need to stop traffic to load it on a trailer."

i wouldnt hook the winch line back on its self you can kink the line

97 zj Steve
02-20-2009, 09:00 AM
i wouldn't trailer your jeep with the winch line like that

when you hit bumps and ur jeep bounces its gunna mess up ur line and could even break it sending a hook at a car :eek:

its easier and i think safer to do two straps up front and two straps in the rear from the axles and i cris-cross them as now the lateral movement is stopped better. this allows the suspension to flex as if it was hitting the bumps too not messing up anything

ATL ZJ
02-20-2009, 10:08 AM
i wouldn't trailer your jeep with the winch line like that

when you hit bumps and ur jeep bounces its gunna mess up ur line and could even break it sending a hook at a car :eek:

Worry much? Using the winch to suck down the suspension is fine. Although I wouldn't hook the cable back onto itself, there is no way body roll and suspension bounce will break that cable. Rigs bounce around at the end of their winch lines on the trail all the time.. The shock loads there are WAY larger.

I use a hand winch on my trailer with 1/4" steel cable to cinch my suspension down. It doesn't make a big difference now, but it did before when my rig was tall and tippy.

zj95maxx
02-20-2009, 10:54 AM
Exactly what I was thinking Cam, winching yourself out of a sticky situation produces more load on the winch than keeping the body from rolling.

as for the wrapping around on itself, that will be changed.

slim616
02-20-2009, 11:03 AM
With the jeep that far back does it sway any when you get up to speed. Also to keep the body roll down I take two straps, one to each rock slider and ratchet it down. This way when I go around the corners or have to switch lanes fast it doesn't sway side to side at all. At first I didn't worry about the side sway thing till i had some lady come over on me and I had to swich lanes fast. The jeep actaully swayed so hard that it started to move the ass end of my daully around.

Why not 3/16? It would be plenty strong if you put some support behind it. Even 3/8" will bend without support.

That looks just like the way the Clayton's skid is set up. Clayton's is made of 1/4" and is also bent along the sides for additional support. My skid plate is now inverted and is touching my transfer case. The problem was having a long, unsupported span of plate. I wouldn't be surprised if 3/8" would do the same. I'd go with 3/16" or 1/4" and use something to reinforce it from bending upwards.

We are hoping to be able to press out my Clayton's skid to be flat again and reinforce it.

EDIT: Here is the best pic I have of the skid. It was originally flat.

paulkeith
03-19-2009, 05:36 PM
eh, i'd say you should be ok. if you can get a rough idea of the quantity that came out vs the total system quantity you'll know how much is left in there.

either way, i wouldn't worry about it. draining from the bottom should get 95% new coolant in there.

Ive found the easiest way to drain the radiator is put some of that clear fish tank hose over the drain and then turn the plug. Gives you control to actually put the antifreeze in the pan.

It would probably be good if you welded a piece of angle iron accross the front and back of your actual skid and moved your bolts holding the skid on to the front and rear of the crossmembers vs on the bottom. You're just going to sheer those bolts off when you slide on your skid like they are now. Plus rocks will round them off and you'll have a bitch of a time trying to remove them later on. Just my thoughts. Looks good otherwise.

I thought about doing that but I think I will keep it the way it is. If a rock bashes the head, I will cut it and put a new bolt in it.
PLUS, the way it is, it would be hard as nuts to drill sideways through the crossmembers

For me and pat's skid, we just gave measurements to the local shop and they cut it to size. It was 78 bucks for that 20x20 square

hey you could put a glob of weld around the nut so when you drag the plate on a rock it hits the weld instead of the bolt head. Just make sure when you run the weld around the bolt head you leave enough room for a socket to fint on the head.

I am a huge advocate of cotter pins nowadays. I forgot one in my steering last time I threw it together, a couple weeks ago I was turning into a parking lot and clipped a curb that kinda jarred the steering...and popped my tierod off the passenger side. I guess the castle nut had worked itself loose until that little shake finished it off. Ironically, the parking lot I was pulling into was a napa so I got it fixed in the parking lot and was on my way.

jdconti on here just ran into that on his 1ton WJ. He's basically running the same setup as you Joe. Found out that he's running a drop pitman arm which was causing the problem. Once he swaps that out with a stock arm, he should be good to go. He's on 37's now but especially when he puts the 39's on he's going to have to bump stop it for tire clearance and the tires should rub before he hits the pitman arm. He's got about 2" of uptravel now before it contacts w/ a 2" drop so 3.5-4" of uptravel should be fine. And it just barely rubs it now. So axle placement will be a key factor here to.

slim616
04-14-2009, 11:46 AM

I ran airsoft bb's for years and they had a tendency to disintegrate into a fine powder.. they still seemed to balance OK though. I think the stainless (or is it copper?) BB's are probably the best for balancing. just find something that won't rust or completely decompose.

CrawlerReady
04-14-2009, 02:53 PM
I was running the heavier gray airsoft bb's for about 2 years (can't remember the weight of them) and when I just took the tires off in January they seemed to be doing great. I think as long as you go with the bit heavier bb they should do fine, the copper would probably be good as well so they don't rust.

ouch heh. Did you just start lifting a tire?

zj95maxx
04-18-2009, 07:15 PM
Yeah, it got straight and I was like YES! So I left it jacked up for a while..then when I let it down..it was bent again...I tried many different times jacking it up...kept lifting tires.

I need to figure out a way to make the axle and shit not move. Maybe jam a little jack between the hydro ram gaurd and the tierod? I dunno.

Hammered silver or Aluminum silver

aiming for trailready look a likes...kinda

My wheels are the aluminum (can on right) and my cage is the hammered (left). If you use the aluminum paint, recoat the rings 5-10 times because it leaves only a very thin coat. That paint will also dry to the touch in 5 minutes (no exaggeration). It will kind of dust off, instead of smear when it's still partially wet. I've found that the hammered paint holds up a lot better in the long term and leaves a much thicker coat. But it does fade a lot from its original shine to a duller, more gray shade.. which I actually like.

I tried the hammered stuff for the first time yesterday and was extremely pleased with the results. I used gray, not silver though. I wanted something that would closely match the laredo cladding and the color is spot on. And if it dulls a little over time, then that should make it that much closer in color. I used it on the rings onf my H1 wheels, but now that I know it will match, Ill use this for my bumpers whenever I get around to getting some since I wanted to match the stock bumper color and didnt want to have to pay for expensive powdercoat that may or may not match. :D

Just build something that 'grabs' the rod on either side of the bend and loops under your jack... just a thought?

On second thought, it would have to be extremely heavy duty for the jack just not to bend it..

You get butt hurt a lot. You do what you want and people will have their opinions, and the best part about that is, they are just that, opinions. If you let the little shit like that get to you then maybe you shouldn't sling shit and call some a pussy because they wont follow a big ass tj on 1 tons.

I said it before and I will say it again, bad ass rig. My opinion is you should wheel it more before spending another month making it bigger.

I am spoiled because I can afford to put nice things on my jeep?

I am a poser because I don't wheel as often as everyone wants me to?

You know nothing about me, nor what goes on in my life to decide if I can wheel my zj as much as I would like to.

Every post you type just lets everyone see how much of a fucktard you are and how much sand is in your vagina.

But please, keep posting in my thread, it brings the funny with every post:rofl:
